Uncle has lost his license and business
Discussion
My uncle who had his own cement truck recently had a fit whilst driving, totally unexpected as he had never previously had any type of illnesses.
As a result he has had his license removed which has resulted in him having to sell his truck and give up work. He has only ever been a HGV driver so has no other skills as such that can comman a similar wage. He has never earned fantastic money but has had enough to have a nice life with his wife and kids.
As a result of all this he can now only claim for 60.00 per week and is in the process of claiming for his PPI.
I feel really sorry for them as they have worked really hard to get to a stage in their life where they can start to enjoy it with the kids growing up.
Has this happened to anyone else in here and how did you manage to get through it? Does anyone have any ideas for him workwise?
Thanks in advance....

Looks like to options
1) Spend the rest of his life on disability benefits.
2) Retrain not a great option but he might find himself in a new career that brings in more money.
Friend of mines dad was in a simular situation and lost his HGV Class 1 and has been doing option one for the past 15 years.

He has LGV & experience of running a business. This Sept driver CPC comes into effect for all LGV drivers (already in place for PCV). There is a need for people to deliver periodic training courses to existing drivers. Does your uncle live in Lancs? PM me if you think he may be interested. If it was a suspected epileptic fit and he has no more fits then 12 months after the original fit he can apply to get his driving licence back. Happened to a girl I work with - she got her licence back no problem 1 year on.
That is certainly the case with normal driving licences, not sure about HGV etc but can't see it would be revoked forever for just one fit.
How old is your uncle?

PPI? Is that some form of income insurance? IF so, at least he has that to fall back on, that ought to be a bit of a relief.
Do the docs know what has caused his fits? Any way to control them? May be medicine which could do so then he can be signed off as safe to drive by the DLVA and away he goes?

I'm pretty sure that if he can get medical treatment and a doctor can confirm that his condition is controlled and stable that he could get his license back. Though I might be wrong!
Not for 12 months IIRC, and I don't think they give the HGV bit back
Sorry to hear this, my Dad had to take 'early' retirement from the merchant navy when he developed Type 2 Diabetes in 1991 because they couldn't have him on board anymore, too much of a liability
As he had been working for a 'foreign flag' he couldn't pay into a pension, and so had his 'pension' in savings accounts, which meant that he couldn't claim anything from the DSS (despite still paying his stamp and taxes - he didn't do the stay out of the UK avoidance tricks as he valued the time he could spent with us, and his leave rarely coincided with school holidays etc to enable us to go join him somewhere). He wasn't trained to do anything else, and his age (56) made it difficult to retrain
For 18 years my parents have been living on his savings, not a lot left now and in their early 70's they are both still in (fairly) good health...

The rules are a lot stricter for LGV/PCV compared to cars/motorcycles, unfortunately.
For seizures/fits:
"Following a first unprovoked seizure, drivers must remain seizure free for at least 10 years without anticonvulsant medication."

He should have the time to take stock and decide what to do.
One of the most important things is to have friends and family offering support and help. To go through what he's gone through must be very difficult. He needs to be focussed in finding that job. Whilst it can be daunting, cold calling is fruitful, get to that job before it’s advertised.
Do not listen to the fatalists, they’ll tell you it’s all over and to sit on the sick.
Where is he based? If he has business skills he could be of use to me, im currently taking on staff who are good with numbers and are not shy of hardwork. Its not sales at all but OTE is upwards of £35k, my top earners take home close to £60k. Im looking for people in the Manchester/Oldham/Bolton/Rochdale/Bury areas if he falls into these areas or can commute then id be happy to hear from him if he is interested.
Email me and ill give you details of the job and my contact details.
