Got an internal job interview coming up soon. The strange thing is this is my first proper interview, the other one was a case of "we've got a job if you want it" now that was over 20 odd years ago.
This interview will involve HR as well as department director
How and what should I prepare and should I wear a suit,I dont own one
last time i wore a suit it was my nieces' christening and shes now 18
So what joys await me?

What is the role for? I would wear a suit (but then I don't think I've ever interviewed for a company where a suit wasn't going to be the daily worn item).
How do you prepare? That depends on what the job is. If the HR director is there then I suspect you will get the usual questions that HR ask - strengths, weaknesses, where do you see yourself in five years etc..

Perhaps go and speak to HR about the impending interview, explain that this is the first interview you have had for 20+ years & ask them to walk you through the process, how it will be conducted & the kind of information they are looking to extract.
If nothing else it will show a willingness to learn & listen & a genuine interest in doing the best you can.
As for dress, presumably you now wear what is appropriate to your job, & so given that the interview is internal (and if it is during working hours) I would think they will expect you to turn up in what ever you are standing up in......but check this with HR as well.

Try to understand what the process is, and what they are likely to ask - HR might be able to give you some guidance...
Key thing is to make a record of your achievments and make sure you sell these to them - use them as examples and get as much onto the table as you can. Positive, Positive & Positive - always look for the positive in everything - where something has gone wrong in the past, do not focus on the negative - a simple line of "I was able to take alot away from the scenario, I learnt alot and was able to ensure that it did / could never happen again"
As for dress code - dress for the job you want, not the one you have...
Good Luck

Area managers job
Then you want to be wearing a suit IMHO.Have you managed people before? If not, how do you think you will cope with managing someone older than you... How do you deal with awkward customers. What value would you bring to the job?
Get a friend to interview you as well to see how you come across.

Sometimes they'll ask about a time you failed.
Just tell them about the time you had a dusting of snow...
Seriously, good luck!
That was no dusting it was a blizzard i tell ya Just tell them about the time you had a dusting of snow...
Seriously, good luck!

"Tell me about a time when you got things wrong"
"Tell me about a professional failure"
"What has been your biggest mistake in work?"
"Tell us about a personal weakness"
"If other people were to criticise you, what would they focus on?"
"If I were to speak to your colleagues, what would they say are your strengths and your weaknesses?"
etc etc....
I use all of the above, but not in the same interview obviously....

You should wear what you knowthey think will be appropriate for the job, especially if HR are involved etc.
Do you know the director at all / well ? Keep the interview professional but don't appear indifferent if you know him well, but equally don't get too chummy - it is a difficult path to get right.
Hope it goes well

Pray for rain, as if it snows you'll never get there
