Hi,

my 1997 4.2 Cerbera needs a new battery. Which one could you recommend?

Thanks

Johannes

There are quite a few topics on this subject. It does really depend on your budget. If you want to get the best, something like an Optima at circa £140. However the halfords ones with the three year warranty seem to do the job as you can just exchage them if they go pop before the three years is up.

Hi Johannes smile

I have recently completed this exercise. My main criteria:

a) Will it physically fit - as it has to slide partly under the wing.
b) I went for the highest CCA I could reasonably find - that was CCA620 in the end.
c) Positive and negative connections round the right way helps a lot! smile

Not sure whether you have Halfords in Germany, but I sourced my battery from a Tyre, Exhaust and Battery place for around £60 (about the same in Euros these days I think!).

Usually a battery does have a certain typecode.......

CCA620 is not a typecode I think?

No, CCA= Cold Cranking Amps. I am led to believe (from earlier posts) that the Cerb needs at least 630 CCA.

I seem to remember it was quite difficult to find a selection of batteries with a CCA of +630, unless of course you go to the very expensive ones.

Either way, my Cerbera likes it enough to start without a problem smile.

And no, it's not a typecode - I believe 072 or 069 is the typecode.

I got one of the standard Halford batteries but only had it a week - after leaving the car outside on the drive over a weekend in winter it only just managed to turn the engine. I took it back, got a complete refund, and then put one of these into mine.

815 Cold Cranking Amps - spins the motor like a good-un. Fits without any problems whatsoever (on mine at least). Never had any starting problems since (wish I hadn't put that in wink)

I replaced a normal (healthy) lead acid battery in my old Honda Blackbird engined Fisher Fury with an Odyssey battery. The Fury relied on an electric reverse due to the bike gearbox and therefore the cranking power was critical.

In all aspects it was a massive improvement, always healthy, massive cranking power for the size and they don't lose charge over time like most batteries. I took it off the car before I sold it and it's been sitting in my car for a year. About a month ago I used it to succesfully start the 2.5 litre TR6 engine in my Spitfire. Quite an achievement for something that's about half the size of a shoe box!

I have had a look for the Cerb and think that you'd want this one:

They're about £190 in the UK, but I don't think you'd ever buy another battery again.

I bought the Optima red top 4.2 last March and it was great up until this winter which killed it! Luckily still under warranty, just.
Rang Tanya and they asked for it to be returned to them were they tested it for a week, then replaced it with a new one. The batteries are great for starting but I`m yet to give it the thumbs up for a long term test.
