Has anyone suffered from 3rd to 5th clunking? Is it normal?

5th gear on the Borg Warner gearbox is the biggest problem with the T5 box and the cog can get slowly moved over, this in time wears the metal groves and then you loose your gear.

5th is also a problem due to the need to slug it into 5th to stop reverse from crunching..

Get a TVR specialist to drive it up the road they should soon tell you what's up.

T5 Replacement box reconditioned is £500 + vat and fitting if that helps.

Also it is worth checking where exactly the `clunking' comes from as it may simply be backlash from the transmission.

Mine suffered a grating going into 5th. The box went back to blackpool where they discovered a problem with the synchro to 5th. It was much better when it came back.

Don't use 5th as the gear to stop reverse crunching as it causes unnecessary wear on the known weak-spot - select another gear instead!

.. on a similar vien, when cold my T350 seems to slip out of 5th gear ocassionally. When its warmed up all is fine and I hope its just a trait of the gearbox, not a sign that something is beginning to go !!!

Anyone else noticed this

I'd get that fixed while you are still under warranty...

I've never used 5th gear when the engine's cold! 4th gear is 50mph at 2500rpm which is enough until the oil gets to 40C.
Bit of a problem if you need to go on a motorway or dual carrigeway when cold though!

I can't go from 3rd to 5th without a graunch. I now always go through the gears sequentially despite what is considered advanced driving.

That's exactly the same problem I have and it's worse the higher the revs.

It's the plate that's connected to the spring on the synchro to 5th bending. That's exactly what was wrong with mine and the box went back to Blackpool where the guy that fixes them said it was not a one off. For some reason the change from 3rd to 5th is the worst affected ... mine originally started doing it from 4th to 5th. Anyway, take it back to the dealer and get them to sort it. Mine went via TMS.

3rd to 5th crunch happens to mine as well!

And I thought it was my fault.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Looks like a common problem. Is it normal or a fault?

Can someone explain to me the reasons for going 3rd to 5th and why it would be considered an advanced technique?

Cheers,
Rob
