1000bhp Mustang
7-sec quarter mile from street-legal ’Stang
Late model Shelby GT500 Mustangs are pretty quick motors even in standard trim, but US tuning firm Evolution Performance are claiming their GT500 project car will be something else.
With around 500bhp under the hood and a 0-60mph time of 4.5secs, the standard GT500 is reckoned to be good for quarter mile sprint times in the late 12s.
The guys at Evolution Performance have a headier goal, aiming to turn a once stock Shelby into a 1000bhp road legal monster that they hope will take them straight into 7-sec territory.
The heart of the machine will be custom twin-turbo, all aluminium motor, with CNC machined heads, custom cams and an array of related performance parts.
Apparently Evolution Performance will put their money where their mouth is next month at Florida’s Bradenton drag strip and we’d like to think they’ll drive up in classic ‘run what ya brung’ style before swapping the 20ins road wheels for drag racing rubber and nailing that 7-sec pass.
So far, all they’ve got to show is this teaser pic of their dragster in gorgeous ‘Grabber Blue’. But hey, that works for us!
Ok so big engine produces big power, but also big power is managed by transmission systems, suspension modifications for traction, braking systems (inc parachutes) and all the rest of the assorted upgrades needed to cope with this.
If everyone wanted just cars to manage a corner or two then we would all drive the same little lightweight grippy tyred toy but we don't this is a horses for courses application and there is a shed load of horses here. The more differences in cars the better, and no grippy revvy little lightweight will ever match the noise and fury of the engine goliath in this beast.
long may we have all types of all car.

Did no one tell you that hot hatch drivers are the social pariah's of Pistonheads along with SUV/ Audi drivers and labour politicians?
Try again when you've got a V8 or you're an outspoken Tory boy.

I'd much rather have soemthing that was fast, enjoyable and handled well. I owned a 400BHP Cerbera 4.5 which much made me smile for hours on end not just 10 seconds. Does that count?
If thats all it takes to go that quick then why does Red Victor need over 2000?

7 seconds is Pro-Mod territory... and they will be needing plenty more power than that..! and a lot less weight... but it can be done..!
And for the record... there is a lot more to drag racing than meets the eye.. set up for launches is a black art and takes a lot of skill and practice..
Stand behind one on the launch line and you will see they dont always go up in a straight line..!
