Been looking at a few Lotus Esprit V8,s.And they seem to be about £6-7000 over the price of an equivalent Cerb for the age. I cant think the last time i saw an Esprit V8 on the road.I t must be the rarity aspect of them.Or they must be more collectable??.

Firstly Lotus is still in business, TVR isn't. The Lotus Esprit V8 is a beautiful looking, rare car, and is generally bought by Lotus enthusiasts.
The Cerb seems to be being hit the hardest out of all the TVR's unfortunately. I think it's because Chimaera's, Griff's, Tuscan's are cars that are bought by TVR enthusiasts. And Cerbera's at the lower end of the market, are being increasingly bought by those who just want a 'bonkers' car, and this is affecting the value of them.

I think you'll start to see more disparity in prices between the good ones and the poor ones.

It is quite sad to see how little Cerberas are selling for at the moment. Mine's a 1998, it's done 40-odd thousand. Even though it's only a 4.2, and I know it's certainly not worth it in the current climate- but I wouldn't let me car go for less than £17,500.

Yes, that's right. £17,500.

I think people who are considering selling their Cerberas need to stick at least another £5,000 on top of what they're willing to let it sell for. If every Cerbera owner did that, and there really isn't that many of us to be honest so it wouldn't be hard, then prices would rise wouldn't they?

For example- A £12k car could easily become a £17k car if people take my advice and stick that extra £5k on top.

If we ourselves stick the prices back to where they should be, then people who really want a Cerbera will have to pay it.

As far as I'm concerned, people who sell there Cerbs are too happy to lose money on them and sell them at ridiculously low prices.

At the end of the day though, prices for decent examples are bound to rise eventually anyway. Decent Cerberas are becoming rarer and rarer. This only applies to the V8 cars though in my opinion, I mean, if you want a Speed Six then you go and buy one of the other silly TVRs don't you? A Cerbera engine bay is no place for a speed six.

Regards.

P.S No offence intended to Speed Six owners, but they're cheap and less desirable than the V8s for a reason, right? Right! biggrin#

Anyway, I've just changed my mind. I love my Cerbera too much. I wouldn't let it go for less than £30K. It's worth every penny in my opinion.

Dont offer me £30k though. I'm not interested in selling it.

We're speaking hypothetically here, ok?

biggrin

Don't get to hung up on the 'for sale' cars..... Have a look at the Lotus V8's that have sold to give you an idea of what they're worth.

If you want to price your Cerbie on the 'for sale' prices, you'll pleased to know there's an 01 speed six for sale for £25,000, which means all our cars are worth fortunes biggrin

It's been there Three years though.

Maybe just the opposite - To someone who is not a TVR nerd, the LS is probably a big attraction, who knows.

Hi JensenA,

It's a bit chicken and egg though. Non-TVR enthusiasts (non-en) that just wanted a bonkers car wouldn't be able to afford them if the prices weren't so low; so the prices must have lowered first to allow non-en’s to buy them.
I’m not sure any of us are overly bothered who else buys them as there’s not enough left for them to be labelled as a certain ‘type’ of car – like a Scooby or M3 owner for instance.

I’d be more inclined to guess in the direction of servicing – Cerbs cost more to run than any other Tiv (well mine does), whilst on high days and holidays the TVR ‘enthusiast’ is happy to pay the servicing cost but when something else happens, loss of job etc., the car has to go and quick, because it needs to sell before the next service which the current keeper can’t afford; if it goes past the service interval the price dives – thus the car has to be shifted quick which leads to lower prices.

If my guess is correct, then these cars which are in fine fettle then give a baseline price for a distressed sell – if you and I wanted to sell (but didn’t need to) we’d either have to wait a fairly long time or price match (maybe +10%) to convince a buyer.

Either, as mentioned above, we have an agreement to add £5k (which is illegal in business circles) or we just don’t sell – either way the price goes up, pricing fixing or lack of supply.

Personally if I were to sell mine – ’98, 4.5, sorted, induction – I’d be looking at £17,995 no less, I might be living in a dream world, but I could afford to keep driving and servicing until it sold, and if that was never – so be it.

We could ask Gordo to bail out all these distressed sellers to the tune of £5k as they’ve been devalued by his p!ss-poor management of the economy, but I guess that’s a conversation for the P&P.

I guess this is a bit of a ramble, but in conclusion I’d imagine that if everyone who needs to sell does so at a price they really think the car is worth, rather than what they need to see from it then the pricing would return to normal and the non-en’s would be put off our P&J’s.

Best,
Donny

Well i went looking at a V8 last week.Car was in Dark metallic blue OZ split rim alloys. On paper it was the car to have.On arriving there, the car was not as clean as the pics i recieved.

Various marks around the body, and the interior was not as clean,as expected. It was certainly not as clean as the Cerb bought by Bandit. The car was priced at a shade under £15000. A 97 model with 57,000 miles on the clock. A bit disappointed but i thought i would check the paper work, and if that was ok,then i would make an offer.IMHO opinon it wasnt worth the price it was advertised.Cosmetic side of things i would sort, providing it had a good history.Well mechanically the car was well looked after and had stacks of paper work.Right time to make an offer. So here goes....

Right i'm willing to offer £12,500 cash for the car today(cash in the hand on the day is always a winner). The car is not as clean as advertised, and i'm going to have to do some paintwork and leather work to get it bact to as it was.I recieved a flat no!.I then said well what sort of price will you go to.

His answer £14750. My thoughts now are that we are not having a deal,(and nor would anyone else for that money).Anyway walked away, thinking i will leave it for a week then phone again.(I thought my offer was a generous one considering the condition.Any way phoned back yesterday to be told that the car was sold. Gobsmacked.

There are some cerbs i have seen sat in the classifieds that have sat for months priced less than that, and probably been in better condition.I think the cantankerous one JensenA may have hit the nail on the head about the cars having two different kinds of owners.

Would anyone else agree, that Cerb prices are affected by other cars prices ?

The XKR's, M5, 3200, 4200, Cl600TT, 911's

You can sell your Cerb at next to nothing & still jump in any of the above, which cost a lot more than any Cerb ever did, double the price in some cases.

You could pick out the odd example of cars that have held their price better, Griff, Lotus ? But for everyone that's held it's price better, I'll give you Two that haven't .

Mark - you have soooooo many toys already, don't make the Cerb feel more unwanted!

The car market is a strange business at the moment.Over in the Vette forum, there is a thread regarding the increasing number of Vettes in particular the Z06 leaving these shores for new owners in Europe.I have already had two enquires asking if i want to sell my C5,and there is a wanted add for Vettes in the classifieds. I thought we were in recession?.

I have said on this site before, my cerb. is a '98 4.2 with 10 previous owners, I personally know the two owners before me. both are the type of people that desire a certain car, go and buy one, always nice examples and after a few months of polish and drive they loose interest or someone will offer them a swap for a 3'door cossie or a ducatti or whatever. that's put names on my papers which would possibly put people of...What's wrong with it that nobody wants to keep it?. Or even just 'I'm not interested..I'm after a two/three owner car. Fact is I've bought the car for the asking price, then Check it over every few weeks. New bilsteins, alternator, big fuse, petrol cap,oil/filter, not what I would call hard to maintain and the car doe's not rattle or use oil or water. It pull very strong. and drives straight and comfortably. IMO it's a very good example that was changing hands at a cost below it's true worth. I'm happy but still when the day comes that I move It along people will still be suspicious of the 11 previous owners.

So are we saying that apart from the members here that the Lotus fraternity are more enthusastic about there cars and value them more???.

Just as an example, when i made the grave error of putting my car up for sale last year, the only genuine enquiry i had was from Simon Cerb999.the rest were from non enthusiasts.I.e the southend brigade.I would hate to think that this it what they have become.

They are seen buy many as thee affordable super-car. people like me can't afford a porche 911 turbo and even if i could, I would not be able to afford the repair bills. at least I can spanner this myself and get the parts form the local motor factors, for much of it. But unlike the two or so before me, I like things to be mechanically right and will keep it that way.

Hi Guys If you look in the classified here today you will see only 21 cerebra’s for sale. Out of a total number of??? How many left? Considering the number left and the fact that there are some very nice conditioned Cerbs out there you only have to take a look through this forum to see what sort of work is being carried out, the price being offered now is far too cheap and has been for quite some time. As MisterTVR has quoted earlier you have got to be looking at least 5K on these prices. This is only my opinion but at the moment the TVR Cerbera is selling far too cheap.smile

Is It not generally the way though, great cars come out and cost a fortune,6/7 years later devaluation takes it's tole, then people can scrape enough cash together to buy 'a cheap one' rag it round until it brakes down or brakes up then can't afford to do any thing to it. eventually leaving fewer on the road and so become rare. until they get a new found respect and desirability. Did cossies not go that exact way? I remember three saff's on the estate where I grew up. and they were battered and selling for £1500 at the time. but now they have found their place in the market, the rough ones are being restored or stripped for parts to keep the nice ones on the road. I know it's not a true comparison as they were high build numbers and the cerb. was not, but I'm sure that by the state of some you see for sale the same destiny lays before the cerb.
