Emissions Problem
Discussion
I know i've mentioned this elsewhere but I'm in need of some pointers. My lovely car decided that it really didn't want to be used and to this end decided to fail its MOT on emissions. The problem is that the reason why it failed is not clear cut as it only failed on the lambda, all the other pointers were well within boundaries. To my knowledge this means the cats should be fine and that a likely cuplrit is an imbalance of air in the system, i.e. a hole in the exhaust or a dodgy 02 sensor. To this end I took the sill off today and looked at the exhaust and as expected there's nothing apparently wrong with it (seeing as Baz fitted it I expected nothing else...). I couldn't really get to the 02 sensor to see if it was white, black or other as I need to raise the car for that and didn't have time but to anyones knowledge am I looking in the right places? One thing I did note was that the passenger side air make-up tube (thats what it is in the manual, i.e. the pipe that comes from the air filter tube into the rocker box covers) was flapping about so I have refitted that, but can't see how that could have any effect, its just filtered air vs. unfiltered. I should add that I do have those can style air filters and not the standard ones, I believe that sort of thing may affect the car?
I suppose what I really need to know is should I carry on farting around and tinkering or should I just give in and take it to the dealer?
Help!

Hi Baz,
Thanks for the response. You actually added some high flows, you had to weld them in and a very nice piece of work it looks too! Pleased you have some spares, I need to find out where the issue is and I'll get straight back to you! Looks like I need to get it checked out but worried it will turn into a change fest in search of the unknown problem...

Mine ailed its mOt also on emmissions and I had to get my daughters mini on the system to get it through which was a problem.
For those that don't know the MOT is now done online to DVLA so once the clock started ticking it was a rush to sort out the problem.
It had passed the year before but this year it refused, if I had the choice again I would not go for hi flow cats as I am not convinced they can pass emissions on a UK MOT, if yours can then shout them out I am curious.
Think also it could be something to do with not having a constant thrashing through the year......unlike the SRT

I don't think its the cats at all because the HC and the CO were well within the boundaries and CO is what the cat really affects (please correct me if I'm wrong there...). A high lambda seems to mean that there is excess oxygen in the system so either the car is not reading the exit o2 sensor correctly or there is a leak in the exhaust. Problem is although I have found instructions I don't have the time or access to test the sensors. Might have to take it to the local who will deny all knowledge when the computer claims its all ok or the local sports car shop who don't seem interested.
That online MOT thing is a real pain as well, they had to leave the car running on tickover for an hour as they tested it as the emissions are last and the cats needed to be hot. It got way too hot and I really don't want to have to go through it all again :-(

I'm having the same issue, everything ok except o2 is a smidge high. It usually scrapes through by stuffing up the other exhaust, as the tester is of the opinion the problem is atmospheric air being drawn up the 4" exhaust tips and being read by the probe that isn’t that far up the exhaust.
I think though the high flow headders, exhaust and cats whilst they do the job for NOX and HC don’t slow the exhaust and mix the high pressure and vacuum pulses very well so there is more o2 drawn in any gaps and the big hole at the end.

Not sure why stuffing the other one up would help unless you have crossover pipes? Mine work as one pipe for each bank of the engine (or at least I think they do..).
If you have a corsa there is a H connector upstream of the back silencers. I do prefer it when the printer breaks though as that is less stressful
Nah, I have straight pipes and a pair of high flow cats.
As the limit was 97-1.03 and I read 1.05 I'm thinking about pasting every joint on the exhaust, checking the o2 sensor and cleaning it, making sure the air filters are clean and driving in a lower gear than normal to the test centre to get the retest done.
I'm a bit lost as to what else to do really.
