Bloody Hell. Reported on The Times website this morning that thousands of Police are set to be laid off, as forces around the country make cuts.

This could all go a bit Mad Max, as feral thugs take over the town centres to torch the local Morrisons with impunity.

Surely, cutting Police numbers is the last thing that should happen. There must be legions of council workers and politicians that could be given the boot ahead of the BiB?

I always thought that the Police offered some security.Cutting their numbers is madness.

The Home Secretary's housing allowance could help cover a coppers salary - who thinks she may offer to give it up then?

Linky? This is suicide if true - we should be bolstering the Police force if anyting as crime will no doubt rise massively in the next few years.

There you go.......

Of all the things NOT to cut during the downturn, policing is surely it.

WTF are this government doing to this country?

Despite the government's best efforts to make the criminal underclass illiterate (another debate for another thread), I suspect that news of this will reach them pretty quickly. I would be very surprised if such an opportunity passes them by!

There are many public sector departments more deserving of the chop......like most of them.

Deary me.....

I hope none of the PH Bib are affected!

Of all the departments that you could cut back on a decision has been made that it should be the police force.

I am lost for words.

Indeed; I am lost for an explanation too.

I cannot see the political reasons or the logical reasons no matter how hard I think.

The article did seem to suggest that the job losses were to basically be replacements of Police with civvies in back office jobs....whether this is true or just the spin I don't know.

Either way, it isn't the greatest message to send to the electorate huh?

Still a bit dumbfounded by this one....

don't forget the PCSOs! I feel so much safer when I see an underdeveloped 20 yer old in an ill-fitting PCSO uniform patrolling the streets.

Is this really true?

If so, how can they justify keeping 'climate change' inspired civil service (non) jobs before the well being and basic security of the average man and woman in the street?

Perhaps this is part of a bigger plan. Cut the police force, and then make the army start policing the country, then Gordo can call himself a military dictator.

Will that be the same cameras that can't support evidence in court because the images are too grainy, and the ID cards that will spawn whole new forgery market?

I'm happy to sit here and gloat at all those fking morons who voted these s in in the first place. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence knew which way the economy/country would go within a term or two.

Please tell me there are a few people on here who voted for these idiots.....and that you have seen the error of your ways and that you will never do it again. Anyone??

Cutting the Police Force in the midst of the biggest downturn in history!!! WTF!!
Yes - I voted for Blair originally. In 1997 he presented a much needed new face and direction away from the tired Tories that were in power.

No - I won't vote for Gordon Brown. The man is clearly an incompentent schemer.

It is generally accepted that no democratically elected Government can be effective after it has been in power for over a decade - they simply run out of ideas and energy, and are bogged down by their previous mistakes.

But I do consider myself to have an "ounce of intelligence" and generally not to be a "f8cking moron", so I am not sure how that sits with you...

Not especially, but then did you believe John Major and his Citizens Charter and Back to Basics Campaign?

The Tories utterly failed to tackle crime too.

I said months ago that Gordon would come up with something to enable him to skip having to have an election, civil unrest or something.

We might as well save the money.

This government long ago abolished punishment, so what’s the point in catching criminals?

The government have no capital punishment, no space in prison and sentencing guidelines that require the judiciary to impose sentences of no deterrent value.

Then when the convicted fail to pay their fines, or do the community service, no effectual response.

The cutting of Police is simply a logical step in the illogical policies that characterise this government.

We will replace the Police by buying Gordon a fiddle.

Gordon will then fiddle while England burns. Perhaps afterwards he plans to rebuild something in the smoking ruins of his policies.

After all, with all the experiences of filling in M.P.’s expense claims and having their offices raided, they should know all there is to know about fiddling.

But they didn't effectively ENCOURAGE it, which is what this lot have done with their pathetic soft approach.

I think the problem Alex, is that every Labour government, regardless of having a trendy prefix, will always revert to type. I don't know how old you are but for many of the older posters, we remember the utter breakdown that led to the 'sick man of Europe' in the latter part of the 70's. What happened towards the end of the last Conservative period is chickenst in comparison. History has a habit of repeating itself unless a concerted effort is made to change the system so it can't happen again.

We have only ourselves to blame as we, the electorate, haven't pushed hard enough for democratic change when it comes to the rules such as an election is forced if there is a incumbent party leadership change, capping government and individual term lenghts etc... I don't have the answers, there are far more qualified and intelligent people that could step up, but it doesn't hide the fact that Labour hasn't done anything that it hasn't done before.

Saying that we vote the party in and not the individual is tosh before we go down that route. You have said you voted for Blair - not Labour as many voted for Thatcher and not necessarily the Tories as before. Not specifically a poke at you but often a touted line.

Simple really. A camera on a stick makes rather than costs money, doesn't feel the need to have time off, and gives the public the nice cozy feeling that they are being protected.

All we need to now, is upgrade the cameras on sticks with a set of wheels, and we can get rid of all those expensive policemen.

Sadly, I suspect this is closer to reality than it ought to befrown

Having read some of responses to that story, few appear to share the average PHers' view.

If there are effective cuts to the pen and keyboard pushers numbers, then I'm all in favour of it! The street patrolling bobby disappeared well before may 1997.

For whatever reason, for the average law abiding citizen, the Police have become an expensive ornament since the 1980s. They do not take the crimes most likely to affect the average law abider seriously. It did not used to be like that. Who sent in the bean counters? Yeah right!

Today's hub cap tea leaf is tomorrow's car thief! ... criminal progression being what it is, get away with these 'minor' crimes and you have next years murderer. It did not used to be like that!

Until this nation as a whole, and not the current multiplicity of 'them and us' mindsets, is prepared to take effective action, then gawd knows how worse it will all become. The roots of all this started well before May 1997 and the sooner everyone recognises that, then the better the chance of things "Getting Better".

One of the responses to that newspaper article is most worrying if true:~

Cut their pensions and this will free up cash for police officers. Over 40% of the budget goes on pensions!!! what a joke!
