I always take the following:
Handbook (now replaced with Grahams manual, driving License+copy, Registration form, Ins Certificate, bulbs, foot pump, warning triangle, Hi viz vest, jump leads, water, gaffa tape, double sided tape, throttle cable, fuses, and if you have enough room a small tool kit?

Small kit of the usual bits, breakdown cover, spare key, bulbs, fuses, vehicle registration document (v important - French Police want to see this if stopped, can be troublesome if you don't have it). GB sticker/numberplate, flourescent jacket(s).
Note: We see these threads every year, some treat driving in France like its 10,000 miles away. Le Mans is around 500 miles drive from Essex. If you were to drive to Glasgow would you be do so much planning? Glasgow is further.

Trouble is breaking down in France can be a bit harder than just calling up the Rac and getting relay home, for instance it would be really frustrating if you broke down just because the 100A fuse went, I even carry one of those in the UK
