Mkll Golf questions
Discussion
Just bought my Grandad's Mkll Golf.
He'd owned it from new so I said I'd definatly buy it from him when he gave up driving. He's passed away now so I said to the Executers of his estate that I'd still like to buy the car. They offered it to me for £250.
I'd convinced myself it was a 'Driver', cus it has 4 headlamps. Was trying to guess if it was the 1.6 or 1.8 model.
Imagine my suprise (dismay) when I read '1272cc' on the V5!
It's a 4 door 1991 'Ryder'! I'm guessing this is a run-out model as they stopped making Mkll's in 1992?
Still - The car is solid & sailed tru it's MOT after a basic service.
I plan to keep it pretty standard - It just needs a few scratches sotted & the bottom of a door repaired.
I want to keep the car long term. Lots of people keep the GTi's & G60's etc, so I thought it would be nice to save a more basic model to take to classic car shows in 20 years.
The car is unbelievably slow - I read it only has 55Hp?! Was going to replace the HT leads with fresh ones - any other suggestions how to free up what little power the engine does produce?
The car has no stereo so I'd like to put in a period VW radio/cassette player. Anyone know what type would have been fitted?
Was wondering what the best Mkll forum was to join?
Cheers. Andrew

Its good to see someone taking care of a nice original car, personally I ripped out the engine of my 2 owner from new Mk2 Golf & fitted a turbo'd lump! If you want to keep it standard there is very little you can do to get more power. 'invisible' mods like a panel air filter, uprated cam etc are options but the gains will be small, just giving it a good service should help.
There are loads of golf forums, clubgti & edition38 have the biggest following & are free to join.

also worth noting the vwgolfmk2.co.uk forum is very good as a LOT of the members have the smaller capacity non GTI models so there is a lot of information about the 1.3 and carb tuning/runnning problems/maintanence
Best off looking in the club classifieds or in local scrapyards and trying to find a webber carb, a polo 1.3GT camshaft, knock out a silencer and fit a cold air feed to the air filter if you want to go faster but all that is only 5hp in the real world so best just enjoy the MPG instead of the MPH
It is worth pointing out that there are people out there who would offer you considerably more than £250 for it, shame it isnt a 3door though.

Don't bother doing any work on the 1.3 lump, waste of time and money relatively. You'll spend £hundreds to gain 3-4hp and it will still be dog slow.
If it was a 1.6 or 1.8 driver then I would say webber carb, GTi cam, manifold etc 110bhp is acheivable, but tuning the 1.3 is pointless.
Keep it as a mint original for the shows and it will be worth more. Then if you want to go fast buy a tired/knackered/high mileage GTi for £300 and just thrash it about.

Hi! Sounds like a good purchase
Standard is the only way to keep a car like that. I had a 1300 4+E mk2 as my fist car and it was great! I've had a few more golfs since then though... The only worthwhile upgrade on the 1.3 is to replace the pierburg carb with a webber. But I would only do that once the original starts playing up.
There's a fair few retro smaller engined mk1's about now and minty standard ones always look great at shows; the mk2 isn't too far behind now on that front!
Stereo wise, it most probably would have had a Phillips or Panasonic although I forget which one. Which is a shame, as I turfed a load in the bin just this weekend. D'oh!. Get on some VW forums and posted a wanted ad up; someone will have a goodun' lying around

Thanks for the all the info!
Forgot to say.. the car has only done 57K miles in 18 years! The interior is like new.
Have joined vwgolfmk2.co.uk & posted about getting an original radio.
Sounds like any gains in power will be very minimal so I'm deff going to keep it all stock.
Can't wait to get to a couple of VW shows to see what other standard cars are out there.
Am using the car every day at the moment to shake out all the little niggles.
There's two very annoying squeaks coming from the dashboard and thats about it!
It feels solid at motorway speeds. I'm really pleased with the car.
Just need to get the radio sorted so I don't go insane on my commute to work!
