I have a P38 4.0 SE 1998.Can someone tell me if this is ok.heater is on 20 degrees, when front of compressor starts it makes a clunk and clunks when stops,it starts and stops once or twice a minute,is this normal?Or should the front of the compressor [clutch?] be spinning all the time?Thankyou for any info.

It sounds normal. The compressor should cycle for 30 seconds between stops. But this depends on how much it needs to work in order to cool the cabin down. But from what you describe, everything sounds normal.

Thanks for your answer,i was just a bit worried about the clunking noise when starting and stopping is it normal and not a sign of any problems? Also is it best to keep the air con off [indicator light on]in the winter, when cold air not needed?thanks dave

Leave it on, stops the seals drying out and leaking gas.
