OK,

Off for just over a week, staying just outside Keswick in the Lakes with Mrs WR at the end of next month, and wondered if there are any hidden gems that we could visit not too far away, perhaps off the beaten track.. ones that not many people know about.

I know the area reasonably well, been many times.. plan to take in the car museum,(been before) and if the weather is kind, hopefully do some fellwalking, Scafell Pike, Blencathra, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, etc...

Cheers....thumbup

Nip across to Haweswater. The road is tiny and a dead end, so during the week the only people using it are fell walkers. From there there are some brilliant walks, typically taking in High Street, from which the views are excellent. Much quieter than Helvellyn/Skiddaw etc.

There's also a corking gents hairdresser in the town centre; his display of photos of barnets is second to none. I'm dying to see what happens if he "styles" anyone smile

You know you want one!

Worth a visit and close to some good short walks so you can either walk first or work off lunch smile

Castlerigg standing stones if the weather is clear. Just go, look round 360 degrees and check out why they put them there...

skiddaw was a horribly dull climb when I did it, set out at 7am, was home for 11.30am and the whole climb was in cloud. I guess the view would be amazing if it wasnt cloudy though.

Just to add that I have been up the aforementioned fells more times than I have had hot dinners many years ago, nice to re-visit them, however the pub and pencil museum sound good.....smile

Nip up Catbells for a shorter walk with some lovely views, can start the walk from Keswick and its lower level so good if the tops are in clouds.

Last time I was there I ran over Catbells and on to Buttemere, where I had a lovely swim ! (it may have been a bit hotter though)

The loop round Buttermere is also a very pleasant walk.

There used to be a barbers like that in Godalming. It looked like he hadn't updated his model shots since 1973.

The Drunken Duck is well worth a visit. Great food but remeber to order the veg, it doesnt come as standard with the meal.

I often think it is a waste of time walking on the tops in the lakes in the mist, better to put off till a clear day. Skiddaw is just one long boring plod anyway, but the views are spectacular from the top.

My favourite walk used to be Scafell Pike from Seathwaite, via taylor gill force and the "corridor" route.....not in mist though....nono

I did take Mrs WR to the top in our younger days and she never spoke to me for a week..hehe, hence why I need some alternative ideas......smile

Did that route in the rain in April last year. It was raining that hard the path by Taylor Force was a river and my boots were soaked through within 45 minutes, so we buggered off to the pub instead.

hehe

That's one of the funniest photos I have seen in a long time!

Well done Orb!

(Reminds me of when I was a student and we used to take Freshers to this Polish barber in Manchester who did hair cuts for a quid. We would assure the new student that he was brilliant and did a fantastic job, and that whatever you wanted done he could do - he was a real old pro.

We would get the unsuspecting student in the chair, have him describe in detail exactly how he wanted it cut, and the old barber (who was about 80) would nod and then scalp him with electric clippers. The old boy only knew one cut - shaved.))

Take a drive over the Wrynose and Hardknott passes, and then have a trip on the Ravenglass railway. Nice day out.

Great Gable is also a good walk - not quite as high as some of the other hills, but good views down Wastwater.

And the Honister slate mine/museum is just up the road too.
