Ambient temp . . Inlet air temp and Cockpit Sensor

Following on from the 'New Ultima web site to airbox' thread it got me thinking that I'd like to know what temps I have around me, as I'm getting a bit paranoid about it. A ambient temp sensor in the front clip and an inlet air temp (IAT) sensor (I've a carb so call it under-clip sensor) and a cockpit sensor would be good, but being a complete electrics numpty I have no idea where you get these from or how to wire them into some sort of display!!!!
Any suggestions on how to get started???

Hi Graham, the easiest thing to do would be to search for aftermarket units, remember Tuxmans, mounted sideways in the cockpit. You can get mutli-channel ones with sensors on long leads, so no real knowledge necessary.

Had a similar one of these guys on an old car, very simple and reliable.

I'm sure you could make one yourself for far less, but if you're not that way inclined these work well.

I bought a cheap jobbie from Halfords
Reads interior temp and an exterior sensor on a lead.
It was so cheap you could buy two and cut the sensor off one to run both the exterior sensors through a switch.

Bringing the subject over here now.
That housing is just what I wanted to see.
The covering in heat mat is genius because I can now make mine using probably plywood with a GF skin then the heat mat to hide what a cheapskate I am.

Do you have the K&N part number for the filter as I contacted them and gave my engine details so they could work out what size I needed but they never got back to me?

Are the sensors special or from a donor?

Air filter: K&N (CHEVY CORVETTE 5.7L F/I 1990-96) p/n 33-2035 £75.72+VAT (in Jan-06), ordered through Halfords. Good for 600hp I seem to remember.

Temp sensors, 1x standard GM as specified for MegaSquirt. Dash sensor I can't remember, stainless twin spade terminal jobbie for Farnell.

My air box was made from laying up flat sheets of GF, then using some more, on the corners to form the box. Then GF into the top of the clip - cheap as chips Steve.

I want to do the same for a few temps on my GTR. I got one of these for about £20 from RS components that takes any standard PT100 temperature sensor (loads of varieties depending on what you want to measure). Just a simple one hole panel fixing too.

That one says it takes NTC 10kohm sensors not pt100. They do one that does takes the pt100 sensors but it has a bigger display. It doesn't look as good as that one though!

Dave..you're right. So maybe not as flexible as I thought. NTC 10Kohms are probably not hard to find for air temp apps, but maybe not so easy for other measurements where PT100 or thermocouple seems to be the king.

Anyway. I'll leave it there before my post get's moved to the geeks forum.
