XBX 360 - same numpty questions
Discussion
pardon what may be simple and reposted questions (hard to find these topics using search function
1. had an xbox 360 that died with 3 segments of the ring illuminated, understand this is a common problem. box was out of warranty so bought a replacement elite machine. Is the old one repairable / worth anything. would rather repair and give to charity/my brrother than just bin it
2. I had various game progresses saved to the old hard drive, how do I copy these to the new elite hard drive so I don't have to keep swapping them over? I did read the instructions whihc indicated it was possible to copy to external memory devices via the USB slots, but when I connected an extrenal hard drive the xbox did not seem to "see" it and show it as a possible save destination. Help?
3. Was making my way through COD3 and it keeps crashing, same point every time whilst loading next level after playing the intro movie. the disc does have a blemish on it that I cannot wipe off so suspect that is the problem. Any good way to clean discs? If I borrow a friends COD3 and progress through this level to the next one, will this solve the problem if the game only sticks at this point, ie if I continue game at last checkpoint it will be in a different place?
thanks

First, if you have the RROD the xbox is covered by a 3 years warranty, but then even my cat knows this as it is very common knowledge.
As for transferring your info, again this has been covered million of times on here and every other xbox forum in the world, buy a transfer kit to be used with the 120Gb hard disks.
As for COD3 jest get the disk cleaned properly and it will be fine, then install it to your new large hard drive.

RROD is the 'Red ring of death' or the common overheating problem on the Xbox 360.xbox bought in dec 05 so still out of warranty i guess

If the console has that specific problem then it is covered under a 3year warranty, not the originally stated 1yr.
Can't help with a disc cleaning kit.
But I know some high street shops (Game certainly do it, for around £2-3) can provide the service

Most likely out of Warranty but worth a Phone Call. Make sure you get an Agreement before sending it off anywhere though. A backstreet sort of place will be able to fix it as it is generally just an issue with the cooling. RROD- Red Ring Of DeathAdam B said:

As has been stated, there are kits to help this...Kit

This makes a lot of sense and will more than likely work. Just a problem in that area of the Disc hopefully but again, Argos probably have a Disc Mending Kit.Adam B said:

Even though your Xbox is out of warranty this does not mean you will not get it replaced. My suggestion would be to take it back to the place of purchase and the may replace it (Game did with mine after 2 years with no receipt) Failing that get in touch with Microsoft direct and I will be very surprised if they do not change it but you will have to send your machine back and they will send out a reconditioned Xbox to you FOC.
I hope you find this helpful along with a selection of the other posts above.
if you have the Red Ring of Death, Microsoft will almost always repair/replace it free of charge, however if you are within your 1 year warranty from the shop, go and get a new one from them. Gamestation gave me a new one within about 3 minutes, I did not even have my original receipt and was not in the same branch I bought the Xbox, however they managed to find me on the system. They do not question it if it has the three red rings, and neither do Microsoft if you are out of your shop warranty but inside your Microsoft warranty.

As this is a forum for genuine car enthusiasts why would you know what RROD meant. You did what any reasonable person would and find the sub forum within this club and ask for advice. If I wanted advice about a RS4 (as this is Piston Heads and not xboxliveaddicts) I would dip into the "Audi" sub forum, ask the question and hope that I did not get such a blunt and objectionable response to what is a reasonable question.

Just an update for anyone in the same position:
1. Tried Game but they will only deal with machines within year 1 of warranty, at least that is what my local branch said
2. Good news, rang xbox support and after the assault course / krypton factor that is their menu system I managed to speak to an Indian rather than get diverted to the website. My machine was manufactured in Nov 05 and bought sometime before xmas 05 from memory. I quoted serial number, I had never registered the product with MS but they had purchase date as 20 Jan 06. They still honoured the 3 year warranty and so I have to do the whole send off via UPS thing. Very pleased as I guess I get another 12 month warranty onthe refurbed box.
3. Game clean discs for £2.99 or 3 for £5 - COD3 now all good and I am back shooting Germans for the French resistance
thanks again to all

you've copied the files with the transfer cable right?
if not buy a 64mb memory card like the one below and spend about 5 minutes manually copying everything across.
