creamy oil filler cap

checking over the car today and noticed a thick creamy gunge in my oil filler cap,should i be worried?

not really worried - i would give it an oil change asap

If it is just in the cap I wouldn't worry. Damp cold conditions and short trips can cause it.

might be worth checking the rest of the breather system as well ,mine was full of the stuff .

If the air in the crankcase is damp then as the engine heats up the 'steam' will rise to the high points in the engine, ie the filler cap.

Worth changing the oil and keep a close eye on it. Have you looked at the water tank? Any nasties on the water surface?

Evening chaps,thanks for the advise,i checked the breather pipes today and there was quite a bit of gunk in there so ive cleaned them out.I have been doing a few short trips lately,will have to start taking the long way to work!

BTW i only had the oil changed 2 weeks/200 miles ago,changed the turbo/coolant hoses aswell as they were a bit drippy

got a rolling road session booked tomorrow see if she's running how she should,been cutting out at roundabouts/junctions........

Hi Mr manners ....i think this is a pretty major issue as all the crap in that tank flows straight into the sump !!! get in on the group buy for a new alloy tank QUICK !!!!! this will sort out the problem . remember the biggest problem with the steel tank is it rusts !!! inside .

Just a temporary measure until I get the new one, but I half-filled mine a couple of times with methylated spirit, managed to get it everywhere as it's quite hard to shake with those 3 holes positioned where they are. Then let it dry for a couple of days and shook out the many loose bits of crusted metal/crap. Every time I thought I was done another little bit started rattling inside . Grrrr!

If the tank is rusty inside i would NOT use it !!! unless you put a filter in the return to the sump .

i have cleaned all my pipes by washing the in petrol then blowing through with airline ,i have also dropped a small piece of string through them tied a small piece of cloth and pulled it through (soaked in petrol ) . simon

my tank doesnt have any rust in just the salad cream!

still probably best to rest her while the nice shiney tanks arrive!

ripped my original one apart as i had bought a new alloy one.looking down the holes it did seem fine but was a right mess when opened up
