Hi All,

I have got to sell my E46 325CI MSPORT for a newer car. I can't afford the new BMW coupe, so I'm probably going to buy a 330 saloon. I am a bit of a petrol head for performance and handling. What will be better, 330d chipped or 330i???

I can't afford the insurance, running costs of an E46 M3, so i'm having to compromise. I would love a 335 coupe!!!

330d sport if you can. i personally have one which i have remapped. it is producing 274hp at the moment and 450lb ft of torque.

they are both good. if you are going to remap the diesel then definately go for this option, if not then you will enjoy the 330i petrol more.

having owned a 330i, e46 m3 and this 330d, i can honestly say i am actually liking it alot.

the m3 is a all out awesome car, the 330d would be looked at as the next best thing. it is a very nice car to drive day to day but i personally felt it to be underpowered for myself.

where as i find the 330d once remapped, but remapped well kind of fits in the middle of the 330i and m3.

You kind of answered your own question there I think !

A simple test - do you prefer auto or manual ? If auto then take the diesel, if manual take the petrol smile

True, but my E46 325ci is auto.

Thanks for the info, I wish I could own the m3. Would a 330i chipped be quicker than a 330d chipped??? I know you only get about 14bhp extra on the petrol and around 47bhp on the diesel.

Ooh there's a whole can of worms there my friend ! The 330d (mapped) would leave a 330i (mapped or otherwise as it makes little difference) on most roads I expect. Totally different driving experiences though !

Different driving experiences? What way??

Is the diesel heavier around corners?

Its all in the delivery my friend. I can't remember what your budget is, but any economy benfit of the diesel will be lost when making progress, you aren't really doing enough miles to justify one, and there are probably potentially more big bills with the diesel if things start breaking. How much is a fuel pump for a 330D?

ETA- Oh yeah, and also the derv will probably cost more to buy unless you buy one with considerably more miles on than an equiovalent petrol, which again raises the likelyhood of something going wrong. I really like the sound of the 6cyl diesels, but the petrol 6 is undountably more sonerous.

Sounds good, my budget is about £15,000. Part ex my car and finance the rest.

I would like a petrol, but if the diesel is quicker wouldn't that be better? I love the sound of my 6 cylinder, is it the same for the 6 diesel?

Yes the 330d would be able to pull away from the 330 due to the amount of torque, 0-60 will be close but IMO Diesel power delivery is boring. It comes in one lump instead of the great smooth delivery of the petrol motor gives you.

The diesel also sounds like a bag of nails from outside the car too.

Its probably going to be the 330i.

Does anyone know what can be done to make the car quicker?? I know a chip will add about 14bhp and a new air filter with a heat shield should help, any other ideas????

I want the 335, but because I can't afford it I want to upgrade the 330 to the nearest if not better power!!

Good choice ! I don't believe there is all that much that can be done (within reason!) to make it quicker. I would advise having a good test drive and if it doesn't feel fast enough then keep saving until you can afford a 335. I would doubt that though as they are nippy and will give you a quantifiable improvement over your current beast.

If you live anywhere near M25, contact Gee 686 (PM) who's posted above.

His 330d coupe is an eye-opener.
Well actually it isn't. I had mine shut most of the time.
Still didn't stop me screaming though.

Very diplomatically he seems not to have mentioned that he did the re-map that transformed his car (and mine).

He asks what characteristics you want then translates them into reality.

In the brief time it takes him, you get to read car magazines, dribble over cars you'd kill to own and drink tea (or coffee if you're some sort of lout).

They'll shove a K&N in while they're at it and present you with a bill entirely disproportionate (in a good way) to the transformation.

I have no connection with Gee or his company other than being an extremely satisfied customer.
