Well Halfords coems up trumps at £32 for 5litres:

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...

"Meets the requirements of VW/Audi 504.00 and 507.00 Long Life Service. "

Does this mean its VW 504 certified?

Otherwise we get more expensive at £47 delivered for 5litres:

"VW 504 00"

Anyone got any other places to buy from?

Any Unipart store. Excellent prices, particularly if you knock them down a bit (theyre usually willing!). The Unipart branded oil is Fuchs.

'Meets the requirements' is not the same as being VW approved. VW sell their own oil, under the Quantum brand in dealers. I assume it is made for them by one of the big boys but dont know who.

Thanks all.

I noticed that comma and carlube also say "meets requirements" - I suspect comma, carlube and halfords are all the same oil, all Tetrosyl brands.

I've ordered 5 litres of motul vw specific 505 inc a filter for £45 delviered from OPIE oils. Not sure why its cheaper to buy it that way than th oil alone from them but hey.

This is a very good price for 5l too (32+vat + 5 delivery):

Giant con - to keep you in the main dealer service loop..

They use long service life oil .. car has a sensor that detects this oil..

Aparently - it you dilute this with other oil or completely change it for 'other' then it switches from you next service is due in .. to the lower service limits (say 10 or 12K) rather than the 18K which is achieveable with the long service life oil and I guess most assume you can only buy this oil 1ltr at a time at VW garages...

not true you can only switch the service intervals over using the vag computer to normall servicing or long life yes there is a sensor in the sump which monitors oil quality and if it detects poor oil it can put sevice light on, the reason why the ratings on the oil is so important is the engines pumpless injection system relies on the correct oil for correct operation hence it having to be pdi oil, it's all to do with the lubrication of the injection, have seen before in the past pdi engines running lumppy cause the local rapid fit garage has serviced the car and put wrong oil in, have also seen cases where the oil strainer in the sump has become gummed up cause of the wrong oil used to putting oil light on.
most motor factor places know of this and sell the correct oil for these engines so you don't have to buy from a main dealer, but it is good practice to buy from them as they have spent years of research developing the oil for these engines with the oil companys. vag are not the only ones now req special oils for there engines and can invalidate a warranty if problems occur down to wrong oil grade etc.

as for the non long life oil that vag use the quantum stuff is really good and i use it and i would recomend that oil for most cars providing they use the right grade, even thou you get it from vag on the label it covers wide range of vehicles and is excellent.
