No dear, lets not have the one we agreed on earlier.

Lets buy the Matsui one. Quite right dear, its only a DVD player after all.

I know, incredible isnt it, putting all of that technology together for only £20 quid. Yes dear, they most probably have got thin fingers. No, im sure it will be fine. Of course they are all the same thing anyway, everyone knows that.

Whats that dear? Its smaller than the other one, AND you like the colour more.

Well, thats made my mind up then, we'll take it.

No dear, it cost £20 quid, we dont need the 3 year extended warranty for £36 quid, that would be a false economy.

I know, i know, i have been looking forward to watching a film tonight too (rather than escaping to the boozer)

Some time later.......................

Oh, hang on dear, the power cable is plugged in, the scart lead is attached, the disc is in, and it keeps turning itself off?

No, i dont think its the batteries in the remote to be honest.

No, i dont think its that either dear. It seems unlikely the scart lead is causing it.

No, i dont think so.

Ok then, you go and have a quick glass of wine with your friend then for half an hour, i shall just stay here and fix this shall i? Ok then dear, yes, have a nice time.

Whats that, is it "fixed" yet.

No, not quite.

Why not?? Simple dear

Shortly after you left, i found the problem with the DVD player, and it wont work at all now.

No, im afraid not.

No, it seems that kicking it across the lounge, hitting it on the side of the house for 5 minutes (whilst screaming bd repeatedly) and smashing it with the hammer (yes dear, i did really go and get it out of the shed just for that) seem to have not mended it.

Yes dear, i do realise im an immature prick, and im well aware its broken now.

And yes, i suppose i am pleased with myself.

Remember shoppers: Value for money is good.

Cheap is ste.

You *did* remove the little red plastic screws from the underside which secure the laser mechanism for shipping, didn't you? Often there is one slightly less obvious than the others.

With the shipping restraints in place, the player will just power itself down after a brief interval....

...oh. Whoops a Daisy.

Yeah, did all of the usual, and tried several discs just to make sure it wasnt a dodgy one.

Not going to worry, its properly smashed up now, and i am half way there too.

£20 for a DVD player, why thats only a little more than a bottle of morgan spiced rum.

Bracknell, actually. Plenty of clouds, no cuckoos. It would have been a vintage PH moment had the OP revisted the mangled remains of his newly acquired DVD player to find them in place though....but I suspect he's working on getting more mangled than the player now.

Indeed he is.

It looks like he is running out of cola though, so may have to switch to the sloe gin i vowed not to touch.

To be honest, i have had a great night, sometimes the hammer is the only option.

I made the mistake of buying a cheap nasty cordless drill as I figured I'd hardly ever use it and if I did it would only be for one or two holes at a time.

Amazingly, it's actually incapable of drilling "one or two holes at a time." 7/8ths of a hole seems to be the limit before the battery dies and it needs to be recharged. Hopeless.

I think my old mini system was a Matsui from Dixons. Loved that thing though it did break after 5-6 years of constant use. I'd say that's fair innings for what it was.

I inherited some super fandango Sony separates from the inlaw's divorce to replace it but still haven't got around to installing it yet. Hmmm, might do that this weekend...
My old NAD amp and Mission speakers are still going well after 20+ years of use...
