The range of the road side plod scamera ?
Discussion
Just a quickie question, how far away can the roadside plod boxes 'see' you ?
Just had a phone call from the other half asking the same question as she's just tootled past one at about 4 car lengths away, in traffic at about 35 in a 30
Not license losing territory by any means, but it's halfway to losing her license (new driver scheme)
I don't know whether it was a truvelo (blue tall thing) or gatso (large black wooden boxey thing)
Any advise to stop her fretting ? Or are we playing the 14 day waiting game ?

This one was a PC plod in a van with it dumped infront of the van... does that limit which kind of camera it could be?
Around here they don't have the lines on the road when they're doing their quickie roadside stops, they're there for around 2 hours then gone again. Usually targetting things like office closing times or just before/after 9am when people are likely to be late for work and rushing. /cynic-mode

if it was infront of the van, it may have been a laser unit...
the truvelo talivan that got me the first time was plugged into the inductive loops on the road, the second one was a minigatso (no flash, no lines)
if it was a laser unit then had trace been doing any more than 35 coming up to the unit, then you're playing the 14 day game - if not, then you should be ok.
35 is the old ACPO limit (10%+2) and as most, nay all speedos overread as standard, in reality 35 may be about 32, and as such - perfectly fine.
then again, it may have been an friendly, cuddly wuddly ANPR van!!

I think I've seen those inductive loops, do they look like a mesh pattern in the tarmac ?

Luckily she was doing 35 by the speedo maximum... whch I've assured her will overread by a little bit, so I don't think she will have had her mugshot taken...
If it's APNR then we're in the clear

Either a mesh pattern or a number of lines across the tarmac where you can see tar has been poured to infill the groove in which the cable has been laid.
Another thing to watch for dependant upon which s-camera partnership area you are in are white lines either side of the loops. Eg in West Mercia a few yards either side of the wires there are two short white lines about a foot long maybe 2ft - 1 yard apart, ie two lines both before and after the loops.
There is also somewhere, but sometimes difficult to spot, a shortish grey metal post on the verge just by the van parking place. This is for the data connection between the equipment and the loops.
Hope that helps.

the minigatso or whatever it was that got me didn't have lines on the road...
that was 41 in a 30 though... I heard the lines were only as a backup in case of an argument as to the recorded speed...
Correct me if i'm wrong but, I think the lines were a secondary proofing of excess speed, like when two officers are in a car, they are two independant acessors of speed, or an officer and a vascar or similar.
If it was a van, then the officer inside must determin if the speed is excessive, he triggers the unit (be it laser, minigatso or whatever) which then backs up his assesment with a reading.
Keep your fingers crossed.
