1995 4.6 hse

hi i have a 4.6 hse which i have just brought with a over heating problem, so fitted new head gaskets skimmed heads, new thermostat, water system flashed through, compression tested 145 psi on all 8 and all held that psi for at least 10 min s , no bubbles in header tank. water pressure tested no drop and when engine started no rise in pressure, till water started to get hot and not by a great deal, viscous fan seams to be fine ,new header tank cap fitted and with electric fans , still gets hot.
the temp gauge stays in the middle for about ten mins, then starts to rise quick , hoses get hard , then starts to blow out of cap water temp at that stage is 95 degrees. any idea s would be a great help. thanks again jeremy.

Slipped liner/porous blockcry

Have a sniffer test done to confirm hydrocarbons in the coolant.

Admittedly that's worst scenario. Could be an air lock or faulty thermostat.

thanks for reply

that's my worst fear after all that bloody work to do head gaskets but thought it would of shown a problem when compression test was done, or when i pressurized water system no drop and you would of thought it would of risen when engine was started.is there something i can get like a pill that i can get to drop in the water to show if got burnt gases in it.

thanks jeremy

Perhaps try a new radiator anyway?

I hope for you it's not the block as it's an expensive job and only replacement will sort it. I just had to replace a 4.0 litre in my Disco. Managed to get a brand new LR engine from Causeway 4x4. Supply and fit with new rad was £3k, and that was cheap.

Don't know about pills but any 1/2 decent garage will have the gear to do a sniffer test. It only takes a couple of minutes so won't cost much.

Definitely worth the sniff test, just to be sure... but it could easily be the radiator. The radiators are very prone to silting up and no amount of flushing will move the blockage once its there. My 4.6 was very prone to running warm in the summer, particularly when towing. Long traffic queues would see it blow the coolant out when the gauge hit the red. A new radiator cured the problem and its been fine ever since. (1995 with 120k on the clock)

Just for future reference
The little tube at the top of the rad gets blocked on these and this prevents back flow to the headder tank

always check you have a flow here and at the headder tank to prevent overheats

Note the little tube from rad to headder can also get blocked.

easy fix that does not require new rad
