There seems to lots talked about the M3 SMG box but nothing about the one in a 330.

Any views on them as I am told they are completely different.

A BMW service tech. guy said it was the same box as in the E36 M3...i.e. SMG 1, whereas the E46 M3 has SMG 2.

I don't think that is correct.

It is not called SMG but the name won't come to me,

Ah, SSG I think is what it is called. Sports Sequential Gearbox

Just to add some Ying to Paoloh's Yang, for everyone who slates the SMG you'll find someone who praises it. To drive for a week or two, its not great, spend time getting to know it and, IMO, its incredible.

Sorry guys ,wish i could ,but as i studied trad. chinese med.i can't let that go.I'm gonna be a total ########## and say actually his comment was Yin and yours is in fact Yang. Forgive my anality?

haha...fair enough, we'll agreed to disagree. Havent had mine on the track, so it would seem its even better than I think it is! hehe

I have owned all levels of SMG and can honestly say, they are all dreadful!!

My M5's gearbox had less savvy than a senile old man.
