Best bet to start with is to get a haynes manual for whatever car you will be driving. Or mum/dad's car if it'll be that. Or join a local car club. There will be all types of folk, from the type who just chuck it at the dealer to those that consider engine swaps an afternoon's faffing about. Jon and just have a chat. Most people who know how to play with cars are quite happy to have people watch and try to teach them as they go. A mate asked me recently if I could change his brake pads and discs. I told him I would show him how to do it instead. I did one side, and he was quite surprised at how simple it is. He then did the second half on his own. Well, I had to undo some of the bolts, but only because he wasn't strong enough.
