Regarding the where to live in London thread, it got me wondering about why people commute in from the surrounding areas. I guess if you've always lived there then it's reasonable. I talking about people who live in London and move out, or people who get a job in London and buy a house out of town.

A neighbour of mine has recently moved down to Kent, because the houses are cheaper, as he put it. The houses may be a bit cheaper but he seems to be ignoring the fact that him and his wife will be spending around £7000 on train fares each year. Plus it will add 1.5 hours to there commute time each day.

To me, at least, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I live in Cumbria and work in London. Fortunately I also work two week shifts.

Look at what £500k gets you in London and what it gets you in Kent, then come back and let us know if it makes sense!

It comes down to a few simple things - 'quality of life' and well there's just simply more space. I also find that there is less crime in surburbia, than when i lived in SW London, or at least that is the perception. Crime does go on as usual but it's not right on my doorstep.

I use to live in the Midlands and commute to Cumbria twice a week. I reckon I did the M6 J4 to j36 and back around 500 times in 5 years, about 150k miles, plus another 75k getting to and from the motorway. Then I moved to a 4 minute commute to work, and gained another weekend a weeksmile

Exactly! For 500K in Kent my Aunt managed ot get herself a fairly enormous house with a huge garden. In London, if she wanted to live somewhere nice, she would get a 2 bed apartment for that.....

Maked perfect sense. I hate London, it's an utter sthole beyond measure. I prefer to live overlooking fields and the sea. There is space and a sesne of freedom. Every day I looked forward to going home. That's why it made sense to commute.

Yes, you could spend £500000 on a flat in somewhere extremely up market if you are a location snob, but to say you can't get anything nice in London for £500000 is rubbish.

You could get yourself a large detached house around where I live and still
have some change left over.

As I said in my original post, it seems daft paying £700 a month on train fares (money down the drain) when it could go a long way to buying a nicer house in London.

I suppose it depends if your priority in life is to have biggest house you can get for the money you have.

Agree with you, if we're comparing say Alton (1hr train, where a few of my friends have relocated) to Ashtead (30 mins train, inside the M25) for example. I can't understand it myself, as both are relatively quiet places .. but you're going to be spending the best part of 4 hours on public transport everyday. I suspect it comes down to your personal situation, or more specifically, how hard your wife's thumb is pressed into your forehead.

Where are the 500k nice large detached house in London - somewhere you could walk around without fear of being stabbed please? You could get somewhere ok for that amount of course - but not when compared to the home counties or further afield.

Ps I live in London and commuted from Cambridgeshire/Lincolnshire for a few years, so know both sides.

^^ What he said ^^

I wanted a get a job in London for quite a long time and did a lot of research. £500k = 1 bed flat in a decent part of central London or a sprawling estate in the countryside a couple of hours away. One-bed flats are fine if all you do is work, socialise and sleep and have no hobbies that take up any space, but if you want any more of a life than that then central London is only really an option for the rich.

Well, I live in Lee Green. Although it's part of the borough of Lewisham it's a predominently white, middle class area, 20 mins from Charing Cross, a short stroll to Blackheath.

There is currently a large 4 bed detatched house with views of the countryside in one of the nice areas of Lee for £470000 on rightmove.

What is it with all of this inane generalisation about London? It's like me saying, "Ah Scotland, all that haggis and bleedin' bagpipes 24/7".
