Can anyone tell me why 500 air filters are covered in oil.. I thought the more cold air in to engine the better. Is it special oil
Mine looks drenched in thick dirty oil, should i by a K & N filter & leave it dry. cheers Stuart g

My understanding is that oiled filters are thinner to flow better, but the oil is there to catch the very fine debris that the thinner material alone might not get. The K&N is an oiled filter too!

The suppliers would tell you it is a special oil. To be fair I suspect the proper stuff is part solvent so it sprays on thin and penetrates the element then the solvent evaporates leaving a nice sticky goo. Some bike shops sell it or I got a can on my last visit to Tweeks. If you filter has a thick black coating that probably indicates that it has been working very well and trapped all the dust that would otherwise be in your engine.

When I got my oil from opie oils, I picked up a tin of solvent cleaner and a spray can of motocross sticky oil. Cam to less than a new filter and there is plenty for about 4/5 cleans.
