Sounds like you are having cookie related problems. You don't have any internet security software which is blocking/deleting them regularly do you?

No idea, I gave up last night, and took the laptop to the guys who fix our works computers, told them to clean it up.

Probably too much porn on there....must have a word with the wife about that.

Thanks anyway.

Didn't get my tesco shop done in the end....first time in about a year we'll have to visit a store!

Having been asked to re-log-in so many times and at random intervals, I was going to ask this question on a new thread. Do PH's servers just get tetchy and log PHers off the forums now and then?!

The servers look for a cookie on your machine to know who you are... if they can't find it (or see it) then they will presume you are not logged in. When this happens it could be due to a number of reasons, though the common ones are:

  • Different web address from a link in the forums (eg www.pistonheads.com as oppose to www.pistonheads.co.uk
  • Cookies have been cleaned on your computer
  • Firewall/security software is blocking the servers seeing the cookies
  • The cookie has expired

Thanks - that last option is the one that looks most likely, but do they expire at random intervals? It could just be perception that the de-loggged status occurs randomly, maybe it's a fixed period of time that only seems variable.

The fixed period is set at 90 days by the server when logging in, though it could be worth having a look at the cookie information once logged in again to see if this is being added correctly.

Just done a check here and looks fine on my computer.

That nails it in one way - definitely not 90 days! I can click to read a thread, post or quote in reply, and get the log-in screen several times each month!

That's...annoying. Only once today for me so far.

ETA I stay logged in unless PH decides not to let me.

Purely for the record, I'll post on this thread my most recent 'bounced' log-out by the PH servers (recently, 12.22 on 07 March) and await the next one to do the same.

Hmmm that didn't take long!

Just been bounced off the servers again and logged back in.

Timed at 16:16 on 08 March - that's little more than 24 hours!
