HANS Device Uni Project

Hi All,

I'm currently studying art and design at university and I've been given an essay to complete and i would be grateful for any input.
I won't bore you all with the details but my essay is on the HANS Device.

I want to know from drivers or anyone that has used it your general opinion on it, whether you like it or not?

what you would change about it?

Has there been any incidents in the past that you feel would have been made better by the HANS Device?

Has there been any incidents whatever they were that you feel were made worse by the HANS Device?

please feel free to add anything else you feel is relevent.

Well there are a couple of people on this site who wouldn't be if they hadn't bought one.

Dale Ernhart(SP?) is perhaps the most significant person you could say with 99% certainty would still be alive if he had been wearing one.

If you have a look at Autosport this week there is a comment from the chap who tested the 908 race car that enduro drivers tend to have extra padding on theirs compared with the 'off the shelf' versions.

Did you know it won the Autosport Award for tecnical innovation (IIRC)?

Personally I think it is one of the biggest advances in safety for many years.

I don't think there is any scenario where a HANS device alone could be said to have had a negative impact on the end result. Certainly when it is properly sized and fitted.

thanks for the speedy reply, i also doubt it would have a negative effect in the event of a crash but i thought i would see if anyone has had a bad experience with it. just wanna cover all my bases!

it might be worth looking at collar bone fractures and lung damage.. they are the only possible injuries I've heard suggested . obviously preferable to a broken Neck.. but there was some suggestion that these injuries could occur accidents that you wouldnt expect to get any injury without one...

In the Feb '09 issue of Vintage Racecar there is a pretty good article covering HANS and the three other leading, competing systems that do the same thing.
