Audi R8? What does everyone think?
Discussion
I'm just wondering, am i the only one who thinks that it's a poor man's Gallardo?
Now I haven't driven one so i can't comment on that but it surprised me how many R8 VS Gallardo post there were on here, surely they aren't comparable at all, seeing as the R8 is about half the price and nowhere near as fast?
Any thoughts?

mmmm....stirring up a hornets nest here. Do a quick search there has been plenty of debate on this topic. Poor man's Gallardo? - depends very much on your definition of "poor man". If you are interested in any way then go and drive both and make your own mind up.Now I haven't driven one so i can't comment on that but it surprised me how many R8 VS Gallardo post there were on here, surely they aren't comparable at all, seeing as the R8 is about half the price and nowhere near as fast?

When I say a poor man's Gallardo i don't mean that someone know buys one is on the verge of living on the poverty line, but, it just screams to me "I have some money, but not enough to buy a Lamborghini". I don't mean to offend anyone but, it does. It's a bit liek buying an X5 3.0 petrol. Why would you buy one of those over a 4.8, because you can't afford it.

On that basis a Gallardo is a poor man's Murcielago

Is there anything actually wrong with not being able to afford a Lambo? The majority of the population will never have a lambo. If I couldn't afford a lambo then an R8 will probably be on my list of 'possibles'. That doesn't mean I think its better than a G but it would be the best I could afford.
^^
Are yes but theres the catch, people get themselves a car like this for next to nothing when it does bottom out in prices and expect servicing parts to do the same but of course the parts always remain full retail. How often have we seen barn finds turn up or neglected cars in general because the owner couldnt afford to maintain it.
The motto is if you think you "might" just be able to afford runing a Lambo or any specialist car for that matter you probably cant.

This is of course all in IMHO - and everyone will have their own view. Theres a lot of people that discredit them and everyone has their own reasons for that - But i have found that a lot have never owned or driven one. Sure you could buy a used Lambo for the same price as a new R8 but they really are very different cars even though they share a lot of common ground.
Having owned a Gallardo for some time, and now an R8, I can assure you a R8 is no poor mans G.
First consider you can pick up Gallardos for less money than a R8 second hand.
Second consider that the R8 is far more useable, comfortable, easy to live with, reliable, cheaper to run and (hate to say this G. owners) gets more attention.
The performance isnt on par with the G, I totally admit. But the G handles better (IMHO) and can be used every day with no second thoughts whatsoever.
I do however totally appreciate the Gallardo is more of an 'experience' to drive.
I'd say G owners are ruled by there hearts, R8 owners by there heads. But unless you are foolish enough to buy new, money is not (and was not in my case) a deciding factor.

I have driven Gallardo's and R8's on a number of occasions and hear are the reasons why I have an order in for an R8 V10.
Lets start with the way they look, The Gallardo has the classic Lambo origami styling which I personally feel will date and sets it very much in its time. I like cars with curves like the R8.
Also I don’t like the whole "look at me” looks of the Gallardo. And a last point, at nearly 6ft 3in I don’t fit in them very well. I love the sound the Gallardo makes and the way it drives but find its handling at the limits not confidence inspiring.
Now to the R8, I think it looks fresh, I can fit in it and the way it handles at the limit encourages you to push it without fear that in will punt you into the nearest hedge.
You make the assumption that all R8 owners really want a Gallardo, which simply is not true, but I have to say I would give away my first born for a Miura. The Gallardo is a good car but in my opinion, not a great car.
My R8 V10 is going to cost me £112,000 with all the options which will still undercut a specced LP-560 by £40K, that’s a huge amount. As to performance you just have to read the numerous reviews that are doing the rounds in the mags and online at the moment to see that the car has been universally praised as probably the best in class at the moment all things considered. The 560 might be a tenth quicker here or there, but in the real world who cares?
Don’t be a badge snob, try one before you comment, you may not like its looks but you can’t deny its abilities

My opinion is that it looks like a TT with 'Sports body kit' ticked on the options list.
I have no doubt that as a car it's capable though.
Get down to specsavers mate -there are vague similarities but the R8 looks very good, the TT looks like a toy by comparison.I have no doubt that as a car it's capable though.
...Yet another insecure R8 owner

I agree 110%I have no doubt that as a car it's capable though.
As my mate's missus put it "The R8 would be a great car for £40,000"
I myself can't stand the styling precisely because, to me it DOES look exactly like a TT on steroids which for me is one of the most vaunted (yet unpleasantly desinged) cars for a long time! It looks like an "automotive push-me pull-you!"
I don't like the roundey, jelly mould styling - and I know that's 100% subjective / personal opinion.
Sounds quite nice - I'd like to hear one that has been 'allowed out' with a nice sports exhaust on it.
I am sure it is emminently capable and as well engineered as all German cars are...
...but again, for me the whole 'ease of drive' to the extent that a non-car person can drive it with ease is most definitely not a selling point! (I'm not advocating that cars should exclude people) I jsut don't like the bland, sensationless drive of most modern cars (not just Audis / German cars etc)
£110k+ for an Audi, no matter how capable seems insanity to me
However, if it ticks the right boxes for their owners, good luck to them
(just make sure you either keep it for ever or sell it in 6 months and make your money back
before it depreciates down to painful levels!) In all fairness - that goes for almost any new car - At least, due to the
(Like the GTR35)
I personally would go for the Nissan myself!

Also what makes a Lambo worth £100K+ and not an Audi? I'm sorry that just smacks of badge snobbery. Any new car is going to lose money, that’s just the way it is and I accept that
Should we expect car development to stand still? Back in the day your Lambo would have been regarded as one of the high points, but let’s be honest any number of what would be regarded as lower class cars would show it a clean set of heals today.
Cars that have an unruly demeanour can and are great fun to drive and anyone who can drive should be able to drive a Diablo just not at 7/10th's. Cars that are hard to drive tend not to be that quick.
I am not a particular Audi fan, I have never owned one apart from my up and coming R8 V10, but I am a car fan. Lambo has made as many bad cars as it has made good, as has Audi and every other manufacturer. To lump all a manufacturers cars under one banner is just lazy and short sighted.
Let’s just be grateful that Audi stepped in and saved your beloved Lamborghini or you could be searching for spare parts down the local tip about now.
I am not trying to offend Lambo owners here, just asking you to be a little more open minded, hate the looks as much as you like but try driving one, if you still hate it then I am more than happy to accept that.
