I have a 1.8 silvertop Zetec in my Tiger Supercat. been a great engine but looking tomorrow at a ST 170 lump from a mate. I was originally looking at the 2Ltr Black top.

Should it be stright forward swap from my 1.8 silver to the ST170 engine?

was looking at putting on my Omex ECU and tein 45's as thats what we have at the moment. I don't fancy chaging this. Will there be much of a BHP improvment over the 170BHP as I have found with my 1.8 zetec which did put out 105BHP when in the escort as it now puts a health and enjoyable 135BHP at our last dyno run.

Also would it be worth adding in the future sportyer cams in the 170 engine if I get it?
I have mild sporty 2ltr cams in my 1.8 zetec at the mo

plenty of qurstions I have, mainly as I built the Tiger and got it on the road in 2004 and have just enjoyed using it for the past 4 seasons and not done much to it apart from the odd bits and bobs

So this will be a big'ish mod at the end of this year

The ST170 has variable valve timing controlled by the Ford ECU. Not sure if you can disable this easily, if not you'll need an ECU that can cope (e.g. Emerald K3). Otherwise I think it's similar to a blacktop, so you have the same issues to sort (ie waterpump not compatible with 1800 silvertop pump so you have to come up with an alternative solution to get the waterpump running the right way - an idler pulley is the usual solution)

The ST170 inlet manifold can be very easily used to fit bike throttle bodies as a further upgrade path - quite a few people have used the manifold on a silvertop for this reason.

There's some info on my website: www.mymojo.co.uk/mods/mods_throttle_bodies.htm

A silvertop pump will not fit a blacktop / ST170 engine! That was my point... So you can't do the old trick of fitting a 1.8 silvertop pump - you need an idler pulley, or I do know someone that managed to source a mirrored impeller.

With discussion with dave Walker regarding the ST170 engine as I had at the time a Black top 2ltr in my Westie. He had done a car with a switch on the dash to switch the solenoid. He said the engine did run OK when switched for power at tickover. I did consider the swop, as the exhaust and inlet will fit the Blacktop. The only issue you may have is the height of the rocker cover. There is a guy on the westfield forum, who has just done the swop.
