"The BBC has disqualified University Challenge's winning team for breaking the rules by using a contestant who was no longer a student."

Cant be happy with that!

It wasn't the team's fault - they could simply have deducted the points that the miscreant got - Corpus Christie would still have won.

Manchester can't be that pleased about being given the title in such a way.

Trimble must be pissed, she was quite foxy when she got stroppy.

From this

BBC said:
Whilst obviously not intending to, Corpus Christi broke this important rule when other universities and colleges taking part adhered to it.
and this

BBC said:
I had honestly believed I was eligible as I had indicated my course dates when I applied.
It looks like a huge BBC cock up, if it's such an important part of the rules and they were aware of the participants course dates and the filming dates they really dropped the ball IMO.

manchester were going on about a rematch at the weekend, but since they've been awarded they come out with "of course a rematch can't happen".

Looks to me like at the time of entering the contest, he thought he had a PhD in place which would have made him eligable. The PhD funding couldn't be found, and he then took up the job. He & the team will definitely have known he was no longer eligable. They were winging it IMO. Still a pretty brutal ruling, but rules is rules smile

The problem when rules like this are broken is the possibility that any other team might have had students in a similar situation who they might have selected had they not wanted to keep within the rules........

Whoops, I think you might have misinterpreted, I can see how my post wasn't very clear.

I was not referring to this current season/story...

I was being more personal... hehe
