Classified sorting search results

Seems a bit knackered to me.
E.g. Search in titles for coupe under Z4s, then sort price low to high. The first few appear ok, but eventually there's a break and the price decreases before increasing again as you move down the page.
Also for searching on 330 under E90 3 series, page 2 of the results does something similar for me.

This is to do with the different variety of adverts IIRC.
Premium & Trade adverts are listed first, followed by the Standard adverts.
This means that you get the low to high of the Premium mixed with trade adverts, and then the standard adverts are listed afterwards (hence why you get the high priced Premium/Trade ads appearing just before the lowest price standard adverts).

rfn is spot on, it will be the standard adverts appearing after the premium adverts which is causing the confusion.
If you are looking for a specific car then you might find the 'filter' tool useful. This will allow you to specify a price range and avoid having to scroll past cars that you are not interested in.

I had an intersting conversation with a colleague yesterday who had placed an ad on here for his Alfa GTV and wondered if I knew "why it was so far down the list" - his view on hearing why was "won't bother using PH again then". This was on the basis that even sorted on price or distance, the premiums take pole position.
Could it perhaps be split on each page - 50% premium and 50% normal? It does seem to generate ill feeling.

Unfortunately the free ads are going to stay at the bottom of the listings for the time being, I know it is not going to win any awards or plaudits for usability (something which does annoy me), but the fact is in this economic climate we have to charge for classifieds.
We have kept free adverts for those that want to submit them and will be redesigning the classifieds to make the search and results clearer over the next 3-4 months. I understand your colleagues argument but compared to the other classified sites we are still far far cheaper than Autotrader for a premium advert, and there are not many sites you can still advertise for free as an option too.
If you are really looking for a special or dream car you will look through every advert be it premium or free, and those are the types of cars we encourage on the site!
