Hey up, a friend of mine has a 530 V8 and I was wondering if there were any tried 'n' tested performance improvements for it because it doesn't seem to have that much grunt for a V8...

I was also wondering if you could fit the LSD from a 540, or any other model.

Thanks for reading.

It's the "40" from the 540 you want if it's grunt you're after...

Much work to do the conversion Fluffnik? Not sure if my mate's crane would be able to hold a v8 for long....

Not sure, but it should be easy since the 4.0 is externally identical.

You might want the matching ECU(s), 'box and diff too though.

Getting 286bhp out of the 3.0 will definitely be more hassle...

He had a 540 before but the head-gasket went pop and it wasn't worth the cost of fixing it, also, not many 540s come along for £350, do they?

My E34 530i Touring had an LSD - it was specced like that from the factory. It was an auto and the gearing was very high; too much so for the engine in reality. If you do fit an LSD, try to keep the gearing sufficiently low. But yes, a 540i LSD should fit, but of course they weren't standard on the 540i either.

Looked into this a while ago..

Unfortunatly that engine is quite old the design doesn't compare well with the 540 of the same vintage.

I think there were mods from hartge that increased power but not by much.

confused

It's a V8 530, it has an M60 just like a 540 except for bore and stroke.

Okay, it wouldn't be me doing it, it's a mate's car, I was just wondering if there was anything that could be done after I drove it on Sunday and wasn't overly impressed by the power. He doesn't know I've asked about it as it was just a passing thought, but I imagine that if he did decide to do anything to it he'd do it all himself.
