Schumacher to race fighter jet in his Ferrari

Michael Schumacher is set to try and beat a fighter jet plane in his Ferrari.

The race, which will take place on December 11, has been arranged by Italian defence minister Antonio Martino.

It will see the Formula 1 champion competing against a Eurofighter plane at the Grossetto air base in Tuscany.

The plane will be flown by trained astronaut Maurizio Chelli in races over distances of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 metres.

Bild newspaper writes there have only been two races between a car and a plane in the past.

In 1931Tazio Nuvolari lost a race in his Alfa Romeo 2300 against a Caproni 100 plane.

But in 1981, Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari was more than a second faster than a Starfighter jet over 1,000 metres.

500, 1000, 1500 meters. I'm guessing this wil be from a standing start on the ground like all of the other "Races". Yes, jet aircraft often conduct all of their work on the ground, trundling up to their targets, never taking the air where they work best.

If it's in the air against the Ferrari on the ground Schumacher has no hope.

They had that stunt plane flying round the circuit on Top Gear against a Radical (I think). The plane had to pull up and bank to make the tight turns but it still won!

I think it was Tiff Needell, and something in the back of my mind says it might have been a Jaguar (plane) against Tiff in a Jag XJ220 - Tiff got away first, but at about 80mph the other Jag nearly blew him away!

I've got a clip of an F1 v an F18 over the full length of the runway. F1 won by a good margin.

Can't tell whose F1 it is, but it's not a Fezza....
