Go to your local shop, try both and buy the one that feels most comfortable.

There really seems to be very little in it. I deliberated for ages, read all of the pros and cons and eventually settled on the one I just 'liked' better as neither had much of an on paper advantage.

As for memory cards - yes, you'll need at least one wink

Surely if you want something easy to use then a compact would be a better option for you?

As Dogsey says... it depends what you are using it for. Do you have access to Nikon or Canon lenses through friends or family? What lens would you want? You might be better off buying something like a Canon Ixus 980 IS compact camera.

DSLRs are easy to use if you leave them in point and shoot mode - if you want that then a compact will be just as good. If you want to take it beyond point and shoot then either Canon or Nikon are fine.
