Can any one give me advice please???

My front discs on my CV8 will need replacing in the next few months. If I replace them with either new or second hand vxr discs and calipers is it essential to do the rears discs at the same time, or can they wait until they need doing???

THANKS

Others may correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that would be wise. If you fitted larger brakes only to the front would this not upset the braking balance of the car? ie, greater braking force up front than the rears were designed for, might end up with the rear overtaking the front of the car more readily, especially if not braking in a straight line.

This is assuming you currently have standard CV8 brakes.

I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem, AP supply front only brake kits for some cars. I would have thought the better the front brakes the less you ask the rear to do because of weight transfer (certainly the case on bikes).
The chap who has bought my Monaro has a set of VXR brakes which he will be looking to sell in a week or so.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have posed the same question to The Fish, and so I may be interested in some second hand vxr discs and calipers.

I'd be interested in the rear discs, just need to confirm they fit the earlier 5.7 VXR first. I'm sure some on here will know smile

Thanks Alfie, when I find out for certain whether I can just put front ones on by themselves I may well be interested. I'll mail you shortly so that you can let me know how much you would want for them.

As long as the brake balance is set so the fronts lock up first then you won't lose stability under braking.

Upgrading the fronts only can reduce overall braking as the rears won't be working as hard but as mentioned something like 80% of the braking effort is from the fronts so it won't be massive. However the effect is exagerated in the wet where on you'd want to move the brake balance rearward as the weight transfer effect is considerably less.

I don't know how many channels the abs system on that car has - if it has 4 then under hard ABS braking it won't make any difference as the ABS controller will be individually adjusting each caliper individually. However if it's a two or one(!) channel system it won't be able to have this fine tuning available. So it would then depend on how the two channel system is setup - either front/back or diagonal. If diagonal you'll lose ultimate braking distance.

I believe both 04 and 05 VXR's had 315mm rear discs.
