Sounds like we have more pubs than people who want to go to them.

There are more people complaining about pub closures than actually drinking in them. If you want to save your local go out and get pissed tonight, don't complain about supermarkets.
Spot on.That won't buy a round in a lot of pubs now.......
They can smoke at home as well.
Interesting article in a local paper:
Bring your own booze, says Northants publican
A publican is trying to save his pub from the economic downturn by inviting punters to bring their own alcohol.
Bip Wetherell, who runs The Venue, in Corby, Northants, hopes the Saturday night initiative will combat the credit crunch and the supermarkets’ sale of cheap alcoholic drinks.
Today, he said: "Our trade’s down and I decided to reverse it on the supermarkets and use their low prices.
"We had people queuing up with their supermarket bags and it was a great night. We are not going to be one of the five pubs shutting every day."
People pay a £5 entry fee to the pub, which is part of The Raven Hotel, to cover security and DJ costs, said Mr Wetherell.
He said: "I would feel much happier if my 21-year-old son was going to a party in a controlled environment with security instead of a house party where you don’t know what’s going on.
"I think every night club on the planet will be doing it soon."
A record number of pubs are closing every week in Britain, according to figures published last month.
A total of 39 pubs are shutting every week, three more than last year, including 19 in suburbs, eight in town centres and the rest in rural areas, the British Beer and Pub Association said.

I can see the full circle happening, myself.
Pubs started out as private houses with a few people drinking in, then as more people went, they became "Public Houses" (guess where the name "pub" originates), and were licenced.
I can see people going to one anothers houses for a few drinks, a fag and a natter (called "parties"), and this will end up replacing some of the "locals" as the locals stay in together.
These will develope into what the Americans called "speakeasys", as a way to get together without the interference of the law, in time these will become too big to hide, will be licenced, and so on.
Will take a few years, but with the exception of the food based pub, I'm surprised they're not happening now, especially for smokers and drinkers.
