Just had a call from my mum, she mentions that my brother has been on the phone to her, asking for my date of birth. I had some suspicion so called him to ask why he needs this. He says that he's applying to join the police force (my arse, he's never out of trouble and is a junkie). I have since spoken to a friend, who is a pc, and they said that my d.o.b. would not be required for his application (if he was applying to be a pc), and that some kind of fraud could happen with just my name and d.o.b.

Now, can he apply for credit cards in my name with just my date of birth and name? What can I do to stop this (apart from going through to his place and kicking his ct in)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. would this be better in s,p&l?

edited to fix dodgy, rushed, typing.

he stays about 30 miles away, but am tempted. I've already spoke to him, he still insists that it's for his "application form". Tried calling him back again and he's just hanging up the phone.

Your friend is wrong. I am 100% certain he will need your DOB for a Police Constable application. He will also need your address.

I filled in this form yesterday.

Go round, ask to see a copy of the form. Oh, and make sure you mum doesn't give him your D.O.B (though as your brother you think he'd know your birthday and age so could kind of work it out... Still, that's another story).

That's the thing, it was my birthday a few weeks ago and he called me the day after it to say happy birthday. He can't even remember what date that was (out of his tits constantly).

My mum stupidly gave him my d.o.b. furious

You are correct, just asked my mate, a serving policeman, you do have to put it on the form!

If you are genuinely worried you can put a password on your credit file. I think.

Ring up your banks Fraud debt, and tell them to tell anyone ringing up to ask for a loan or anything like that to fk off. They just put a note on your file.

You could ask for a "security" question to be put on your account, so if anyone rings up/goes in to branch and tries to do anything, they'll have to answar that before there allowed to know/apply for anything.

Why would they need my details on the form? I'm not applying for a job?

Would that just be my bank, or all banks? What's to stop him setting up a new bank account with royal bank of british citizens?

Part of UK vetting is looking into the applicants family too. I had to give details of all immediate family.

Ah, that could be to make sure they are not mafia underworld bosses etc.. and thus able to bribe you to get information.

But D.O.B. seems a bit much? I'd have thought name and address would be a sufficient check, and much more could be a breach of the DPA (even requesting irrelevant information can be a breach of the Act....).
