I would be interested in views on what might be causing a grinding noise / feeling under breaking on the left front wheel of our Freelander under braking. Brake pads are fine but something doesn't quite feel right....

Cracked disc, not necessarily on the faces, can be cracked in the vent part of the disc if weak due to corrosion.

Interesting. I am getting a clunk from the rear brakes every time I brake. Had it checked out and reported back fine, but the clunk tells me otherwise. Maybe a spring gone in the drum? I'd appreciate any ideas.

i agree with the cracked disc theory but also its worth considering that the modern pads of today are made from that much rubbish they make all sorts of noises, the pads themselves could be fine but they could have a hard spot on them causing a noise when braking. had this a lot on my cars when i buy cheap pads from the local parts place.

Problem has not gone away and in fact is now very pronounced.

The Muppets at Guy Salmon in Ascot keep saying there is nothing wrong with it, but I think I am going to let a proper garage have a look at it.

There is a good chance you have picked up a stone and is wedged between the disc and pad.
The stone or small piece of metal can embed into the pad and may take a while to break up or fall out
