My daughter is going back into hospital in a few weeks time, and I have been arranging some time off so that my wife can stay in with her, and I can look after the other kids / come and visit her.

I've recently moved under a new boss, when I emailed him to ask for the time off, he has suggested that I make up the time for the first half day, and I could take the other days as sick leave.

Is he correct? I know there is "emergency leave" for parents, but this isn't an emergency as we have 3 weeks notice; anyway, I thought that came out of annual leave entitlements. Sick leave is covered by legislation rather than company rules, AIUI. Obviously I don't want to take advantage, but if I could save a couple of my annual leave (I've already burned 7 days this year, on her earlier hospital stay) towards a family holiday later in the year when she has recovered, that would be pretty good?

Don't you have dependants leave or special leave at your company ? We get up to 5 days a year here.

How old are your children? Would you mind taking it as unpaid leave?

Sounds to me like he is being rather 'nice' to you, suggesting you ring in sick rather than take holiday...

My son is in hospital for about five days a month at the moment and legislation was brought in a few years back allowing you to take time off unpaid to accompany them.

So no you don't have to take sick leave they have to give you time off.

I did have a boss a couple of years back that suggested I might like to work somewhere else because of the time I needed off but I told him no I need to work somewhere else because you're a .

That's kind of what I thought, hence I didn't want to take it up with HR and potentially drop him in it!

As it's only 1 day this time, I'm going to take it as a holiday, I may investigate unpaid leave if she has to go back for more overnight stays.

I was lucky when she was in Great Ormond street, as I took some parental leave. When my son was in, I was lucky / unlucky to be on gardening leave!

That's exactly what he's doing. Thank him and take him up on his suggestion.

Hope your daughter is OK......

Why would you need to take it up with HR - you are lucky enough to get paid sick leave & a boss that understands biggrin

Noone else need know.
