It all started when I went to pick up my shiny band new Carrera 4 on 1 September. I got off to a bad start when the car refused to start. The dealership soon got it going but I did feel that he omens were not good.

Then there was an awful rattling from the dashboard. That has now been fixed under warranty but there is still excessive rattling from the rear and sometimes from the dashboard again. I also had to get the radio fixed after it refused to come on again after an incoming call. This was also done under warranty.

The worst part was when driving home late on evening some kids threw an egg at the car. I wasn’t too bothered at the time. The egg was immediately washed off and I thought that was it. When washing the car properly a few days later I found that the egg mark would not come off. After a lot of argument Porsche have agreed to pay half the cost of a respray to repair the egg damage.

I don’t feel very happy or am I being unreasonable?

Personally, I'd find the 'kids' that threw the egg at your car, reverse over them a few times before dumping the clutch at reasonably high rpm's before heading for the dealers to claim a new set of rear boots.

I pity the ignorant, envious types out there. Shoot the lot of 'em!

I'd say you did very well to get the dealer to pay for half the cost of repairing the paintwork. IMO this is an insurance claim as it was a direct result of vandal damage.

I'd guess they were embarrassed by all the faults you have had. Did you consider rejecting the car as not fit for purpose?

Actually Porsche are paying not the dealer. I was just amazed that the car could not withstand an impact from an egg.

Sounds like you have a couple of rattles to whinge about, my experience is that 996's do suffer from them more than other peoples 993s I have driven, which are comparatively made from granite. With hard suspension though, english road surfaces and a penchant for absolutley hooning it, I'm going to get the odd rattle.

Get the rattles done and get back to hooning about. The in dash rattle is a common one that has been discussed on Rennlist.com

And there's no cupholder in an RS!

It's obviously these cupholders in the 996 dashboard that make all the noise. Get the feckers out is what I say

Oh that's what it is - I've been trying to fit CD's into it for weeks.

On the subject of egg damage blame Greenpeace, it's all down to the use of waterbased paints, basically the bloody stuff is not dry when the car is delivered to the dealers, heavy polishing when new will cause damage. Apparently the trick is usually to re-bake the car to allow the paint to re-flow, but I have not witnessed this myself.

Also, this time from eye witness accounts, the only RS you will find in a Cup car is the one sat in the driver's seat ignoring the rattle from the engine.....

well I dont think that with the faults you have indicated that this is anything more than remedial repair work!

As to the paint issue, with aterbased lacquers im afraid you will get that with any car

I picked up a new 996 C2 Cab in June this year and have had the following problems:

Leather coming adrift on one rear panel - still waiting for a replacement.
Damage to rear of the sports seats on delivery - still not fixed
Front seats falling apart - still
CD multi play packed up (twice)
PCM has a mind of its own - Still
No sound from radio/phone etc. (intermittent fault)
Hard top refused to be taken off the car/soft top refused to close
Various noises from the front dash
Loads of creaks form the rear
Horns ceased to work
Massive oil useage
General apathy from the OPD

Apart from that am I happy......................not really but I'll make that clear when I change the car.

not too good on the 996 front. that would explain why 993's are still fetching more money than early '96's.
