I know that this subject has been done to death but just wanted some honest answers.....

I own a BMW 330Cd M Sport 55 plate done 40,000 miles. I'm in the market for the DMS chip (204bhp upto 260bhp) but am concerned about shortening the longevity/reliability of my engine if i do. Does anyone have FACTS to prove or disprove whether or not chipping/mapping does shorten the life of your engine upto, say, 100,000 miles......i regularly service my car but will i be replacing a turbocharger 30,000miles before i should do!

Thoughts please.....

I have looked into this on diesel cars in the past and always came up with the assumption that if they were supposed to have higher horse power they would do. I just dont think its worth risking, with the stories of turbo failures etc.

If you want higher bhp, buy a car with a bigger engine, I'm currently looking on the lines of a 328i or 330i to replace the 1 series, running costs are not that mich higher really.

Edited as in my original reply I sounded a bit of a cock.

Over the past 10 years or so, i've tuning boxed / remapped every diesel i've had with no problems.

Hmmm. Always some risk i guess though. IF and its a big IF it knocks 10% off the life of the turbo for example, then you could unlucky enough to own it when it expires. Though, poor maintenance by a previous owner / bad luck could mean that on any car anyway.

One thought..

If you've retuned your engine for higher output it is probably because you want to drive the car faster/harder.

It therefore follows that it is tricky to determine whether extra wear/breakdowns etc are entirely down to the re-map or just the driving style...

and yes, I know faster driving isn't always harder on the mechanicals and some slow drivers are more brutal - but that just makes the causes even harder to isolate (I'm not a car expert but know a little about statistics!)
