So, we all know you can sleep in your car but you cant go for a drive in your house...

but what are your priorities, if you were forced to choose, stunning automobile and a tacky dwelling

or lovely abode and a rusty modeo...

I'm torn and I cant decide which way to go....

I've slept in a lotus when I fell out with the mrs (well I say slept)

I'd take the house every time.

I am downgrading from an M5 to a V50 diesel for a year or so, so we can build a new house. My "Porsche fund" has been used as a deposit on a nice building site and if we manage to come in under or near budget I have been promised a 997.

You have my sympathy. Many years ago I had to sell my immaculate Escort Mexico to raise the deposit for my first house.
Had to run 'bangers' for a few years.
But it was worth it; I enjoyed having my own home, and it got me on the housing ladder.
Think positive; running cheap old cars can be fun (there are quite a few devotees of 'Bangernomics' on PH) - you don't worry so much about thrashing them, scuffing the odd kerb, servicing to schedule, or where you park them.

Having said that, the first thing I did when divorce bought me out of my mortgage was to buy a 'proper' car.

Yea but you've got a decent car, although I did pass by yesterday or Friday ? and see you under the bonnet.

Seriously I guess it's all down to the individual - if you're young enough concentrate on getting that house first, then your outgoings in practise should go down. Leaving you with extra funds later for a nice car.

Nice house with ok car, you can get a lot of car for £1500 odd nowadays. It can't be too bad.

I suspect at the moment the house would depreciate considerably faster than the car.

And it isn't as much fun!

I would take the Lambo out now but I've never driven it and Mr 13th would wake up with the noise frown

You need two pillows, place one either side of Mr 13th's head, over his ears. Now carefuly duck tape pillows and head together. Place all the quilts over Mr 13th and tie him to bed smile

Right grab keys and fire the beast up, off you go driving

I have a spare garage that you can keep her in. Then she can be started up whenever you wish, Mr 13th won't hear............. Oh, and I promise to take her out once a week on a nice long trek to keep the battery tip top too........

As to the OP, I hate to say this (and believe me, I didn't practise what I am preaching here, but I bought in a rising market!), I'd say bank as much money as you can, wait for the housing market to start to pick up, then get in there. The car can wait but if you get a house when the market is low, then the nicer cars will follow.

Arrgh, this is doing my noodle in.

Been to look at houses today with the missus, saw a stunning show home, wonderful location, spacious, huge double garage, studio flat over the garage too! Everything I could possibly want to be honest.

Did all our sums, and essentially we could in theory buy it middle of next year when its built.

I wouldn't be able to afford a fancy car to put in the garage. probably ever.

Alternatively I could spend half as much on a house, with a single garage, would be "average" area at best. less space etc. and get a decent car in a couple of years.

or, I could stay where I am, 2 bed terrace, town centre, not a bad place, just not my cup of tea any more. and get a Sagaris in July, cant say that parking it on the street would be a great idea though...

At 24 I could have bought a decent basic home but bought a nice car because the thought of owning a house was too scary.
At 34, with a wage that's about 50% higher but house prices some 200% higher, the thought of not owning a house is scary.

I'm a car nut through and through, but get the house.

The car is easier to find that the house and if you've found a place you think is perfect, grab it while you can. Then dream about the car you want, and work towards it. It'll be lovely, all cosy in your garage, and you'll appreciate it so much more!
