Thinking of buying a nice Maserati GT
Discussion
There seem to be some real bargains out there at the moment for a GT either 3200 or 4800. What should I be looking for ? I particularly like the boomerang rear light versions and have heard that the 4800 is cheaper to run than the 3200 ?
A lot of the real bargains are quite high mileage e.g. 65K plus, is this a problem if they've been properly looked after ?
What are they like as a daily driver ?
I'm sure people ask this all the time but looking for some current owner experience and views as well as a "Buyers guide". Also any recommended (or not) dealerships around Hertfordshire though distance isn't too much of an issue.

Hi,
The modern Maserati coupe has come in basic form of three models (in the last ten years). The 3200GT with the famous boomerang tail-lights (called just 3200), the Coupe (commonly referred to as the 4200) and then more recently the GranTurismo (shortened to GT).
All three are completely different cars. The 3200 is a 3.2 turbo, the 4200 is 4.2 naturally aspirated (NA) but based on the same floor plan; and the GT is 4.2/4.7 NA engine, and larger is size.
The Maserati Forum (www.maseratiforum.co.uk) is full of useful advice to answer your questions, but in summary yes they are all good daily drivers, but expect high running costs.
Cheers

Bit of advice - at 63k plus miles the 3200s need a cam chain change - this is not cheap - ISTR £2k ish as it's engine out, but I am sure someone will confirm whether that last point is a myth or not.
So anything around 60k miles should be viewd as having a big bill round the corner.
There are several cars on PH that fit that bll, including one car that has covered that mileage which was originally priced at £10,950 and indications were the seller might let it go for the £10k mark....he has now relisted it with a price at £13,950!!!!!
Another car in Essex sold last week - again with 63k miles on the clock, and again needing the chain...yet someone gave circa £10k for the car.
A Cat D car sold for £10,800 last week - Cat D 'cos the engine let go and the insurance company didn't want to pay Maserati prices for the engine rebuild. However, the guy who bought it and had the engine rebuilt by a non-franchised dealer elected not to have a chain done - I know that the car had only covered about 45k miles or so when the engine was rebuilt, but you'd still replace the chain if you had any sense. For a Cat D car it fetched really strong money - by rights with that history it should be a sub £10k car.

and do a search on here, plenty of info.
All the variants are very very different, in power delivery, handling, and costs. A well looked after and sorted 3200 with resonable milage will be £15k ish, 4200 will be £20k, and granturismo £45k+
If you have any specific questions then post em up!

Prices seem to have firmed up alot recently, which is quite good (For me).
To concur though, buy on condition and NOT on mileage/age - Mine has been trouble free since i bought it, but then again its benefitted from a recent new clutch, cats, big service, exhaust, software upgrade, wheel refurb and F1 pump check.
I'd say these cars are really quite reliable, but something going wrong with the biggies will cost you ALOT.
