Had a good play with Friks I-phone this weekend and have decided I want one, but having zero O2 reception here and having been scammed twice on the 'Bay trying to buy one before, I'm wondering if anyone can give me a pointer as to where to get one that I can use Vodafone on- without y'know, getting stitched up by someone whose trading name has numbers and Z's in it.

Apologies for the immense dullness of this post. Thanks in advance.

Take a trip to italy... Factory unlocks.
I went to N.Z. for mine, but that is a bit extreme.

Are you running that on Vodafone? Want to know if the mobile TV works on it as I'm not sure about the media player, any ideas?

Wrong Ben.
N.Z iphones are sold on Vodaphone, so are, I think, the Italian ones.
Vodafone GB also has the settings as people are using them here on vodafone.
I bought mine in NZ and opened the box in the UK. Inserted my Vodafone sim. Registered the phone using itunes and EVERYTHING works out of the box. ALL settings are on the phone.

They seem to cost a similar amount in most countries so I bought a PAYG one from O2 in the UK. Now running software unlock with my company SIM on the Vodafone network. 3G works well too (didn't work with the previoud piggyback unlock). No problems at all, even the unlock was straightforward.

Italian ones are sold unlocked, it's some law afaik
As far as unlocking is concerned I think it's easy enough to unlock both the 2g and 3g models now. Not sure where the best place to get one is though, other than eBay

Ah thats pretty interesting...

I know Orange (who I work for) have the exclusive rights in France and Austria for the iphone. but we cant give the settings to anyone who wants to put an Orange sim card in an unlocked iphone here....

I just assumed as with Orange the setting are not interchangable country to country...

I have also heard on the vine that UK vodafone gives out settings if you speak to the right people in Business. Apparently, a lot of their best customers demanded it.

Does every other function work (e.g You Tube etc) as if you were on O2?

So, is it possible to buy one from Italy without going to Italy?

So, when you buy from Vodafone IT, do you just buy the phone, or are you starting a new contract or something? how does this work?

I'd tolerate going to Italy if I absolutley have to.
