had a 12000 mile service only 6 weeks ago, car has never felt right since, took her out today and she run like a bag of s..t. I decided to take a look myself could not find anything obvious so after reading the bible decided to clean the stepper motor and what a difference My point in question, should the stepper motor be cleaned when serviced.
What exactly does a stepper motor do?
I have heard lots of TVR people talk about it. A couple of friends run V8 rangerovers, but I have never come across them having to fiddle with a stepper motor on there vehicles only half shafts, transfer boxes, output shafts, wheel bearings.........:thatswhatyougetforoffroadingeveryweekend:

I bought my car nearly 2 years ago (a 1996 model) and after experiencing some probs on tickover, I decided to clean the stepper motor - only to find that the original tie-wrap was still in place around the cable and the stepper motor cone was really sh1tty - and this car had been 'serviced' by various dealers and specialists in its life - strange, when you think how simple it is to do. Having said that, it has just been for a service at well-known indi who when running through the list of what had been done, mentioned that he had cleaned the stepper motor, and had also replaced a missing washer resevior cap (I had forgotten about that) - nice to know that finally I have found someone who appears to check everything they should.

Depends on how old their cars are. Early rangies with injection probably have a poppet valve at the rear of the plenum. It lets some air into the engine when you lift off the throttle. Later v8's have an electric stepper motor controlled by by the ecu. This stabilises the idle speed and is probably good for emmissions control as well. It allows air to bypass the throttle blade and the air is dirty air from the engine via the rocker cover IIRC. it's been a long day
