Does anyone have any experience of reflexology? Any opinions of its effectiveness or otherwise gratefully received.

Specifically my issue relates to a problem with my sinuses, but interested to hear any general comments.

You think someone rubbing your feet is going to help your sinuses...

Really ?

Reflexologists posit that the blockage of an energy field, invisible life force, or Qi, can prevent healing. Another tenet of reflexology is the belief that practitioners can relieve stress and pain in other parts of the body through the manipulation of the feet.[4] These hypotheses are rejected by the general medical community, who cite a lack of scientific evidence
Oh dear..

The bloke I buy my magic beans from swears by it.

Once I've finished paying for my angel guides, I'll be giving it a try.

Not really, no. I'm a sceptic, but others may beg to differ. I've tried all conventional treatments and was wondering about something a little more 'alternative'.

What's the problem with your sinuses?

I had a problem when I was younger - one treatment and it's sorted for good.

A proper conventional treatment too, made from science.

Wasn't going to go into the nasty details but since you ask... Permanently congested despite almost constant discharge and due to the congestion I have no sense of smell. Had surgery in 2006 which wasn't a resounding success and now a different consultant is recommending further surgery but admits it would probably only offer short-term relief.

What surgery was it?

That was the solution for me and it's worked wonderfully.

Even if it also means I can now do this -

>bends nose right round to one side and squashes it flat with a finger<

FESS - [Something beginning with F] Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. Clean out of the sinuses plus a bit of a scrape to straighten some crookedness of the septum (I think). I can't do the flat nose trick.

They cut the bone out of the inside of my nose so it's all clear in there to allow the congestion to drain away.

Where it all goes I have no idea, but it doesn't stay in there causing problems.

I don't remember what the procedure was called as it was years and years ago.

<sticks neck out>

I had a few reflexology sessions some years back. Mostly it was just very relaxing, but there were times when she would press a certain area of my foot and it would be tender, or sensitive; not actually painful. When I mentioned this, she would say "well, that part of the foot corresponds to the ------" and on each occasion it was where I'd had previous surgery or a previous injury which she didn't know about.

Could all be coincidence, obv, and there are plenty of doubters above ready to flame me, but you have nothing but a few quid to lose if you give it a go.

I had a very similar problem. Had 2 ops some 10 years apart with no real improvements, but then spoke to my sis in law who introduced me to a bloke who does acupuncture. Gave it a go over 3 sesions when he basicaly stuck needles in ankle and chest area and guess what - it seemed to work!

Headaches gone, nasal presure gone and that was some 6 months ago. I am the eternal cynic but I cant argue with the results.

Try it and see. They say anecdotal evidence is not data but if it works, who gives a st? Let those who like to criticise enjoy their illnesses. I've tried some unusual things and experienced great results. Of course, Western med should be your first choice but you've tried that so...

I'm a qualified Reflexologist.

The reflex points relating to your sinuses are (roughly) across the middle of each toe.

Get someone at home to try a bit of DIY massage/Reflexology and see if it improves.

Do this:

Get some Eucalyptus and some Ravensara essential oils.
Put a couple of drops of each into the palms of the hand and rub together until the oils mix together and heat up.
Take one foot at a time.
Left hand on top of toes and right hand underneath and rub the oils into the toes.
"Walk" the thumb up the toe rubbing as they do so.
Start at the ball of the toe and get them to work their way up and down the full length of the toe slowly.
Do the same on the underside of each toe for a minute of so.

Afterwards spend 1/2hr (at least) just relaxing, drink plenty of water and inhale the smell of the oils.

Some people find it helpful some not, I think it probably depend on the practitioner.

I once cured my own golfers elbow, by massage of the little finger on the same side! my elbow has been sore for about 6 months.

I have also heard that massaging the space between your 3rd and 4th toes can help with sinuses.

I recomend you spend about 5 minutes scratching your balls. You should then spend at least half an hour inhaling the aroma of salt and vinegar crisps and relaxing.

This should help. I'm a qualified ball scratcher so I should know.

Cheers for that. I'll see what Mrs 5pen has to say...

However, I won't be able to smell the oils due to the issue with the sinuses!
