I have decided to go back to some basics after a year enjoying the luxury of a 996 C2. Too many points, a bit of boredom and a need for change.

After a bit of a look decided on a '86 911 3.2. Drives well,is sorted and looks well, and will be a very different porsche owning experience. I should get to pick it up in a couple of weeks time.

When I fist moved across to Porsche i was looking for a bit of a classic. Alot of you gave me lots of good advice which i put on hold whilst playing with the 996, so slowly getting there.

Any other owners around?

I know what you mean with the classoc thing..i went from '89 911 clubsport to '02 996 C2 to '95 993RS.

It is as of the 996 is too good!...

The classic 911 will be a lot of fun,but i am sure you will miss the 996 for GT style long runs & if you track the 3.2 you will soon realise hoe far braking technology has come on! The great thing about the 3.2 is you can have a lot of fun and driver involvement at slower speeds than in the the later 911 models..I hope you enjoy your new car.

Enjoy the car Wolfie. I have "upgraded" to a 996 C4 but to be honest its a bit, well, ordinary.

Can't afford a GT3 so I am having a rethink.

993 is on the cards.

Clubsport : Saw you had a 911 clubsport - a rare beast. What was that like?

I am enjoying the fun of it already, just spent another hour reading the owner sites; some excellent resources around which make the owning of it even better. It would seem to be the bridge between classic and moeern Porsches, and was another one of the reasons of wanting to own one. It also totally confuses the wife, and a lot of my "non-understanding" mates.

I know that i'll miss that GT thing of the 996 but when i am need of of a fix, i'll hire one i think.

Mind you, one upgrade I am thinking of is a Steering Wheel, and if poss. (as its the pre-G50 box) to see if i can get to a short shift..might be tricky, unless anyone knows different....

No don't do it, the 915 is a slow shifting box of the old school that has nowt wrong with it if it is in good order, a short short kit makes 'em just plain nasty IMHO.

Woolfie, I had almost a year with both 3.2 SSE and a 993 C2 at the same time. It gave me the chance to appreciate both cars side by side.

The 3.2 is a great car, but if you can get G50 box, it makes a great deal of difference. You get quicker changes and a more modern feel, you would appreciate this more coming from a 996.

Looked after, the 3.2 is a really practical Porsche, you can use it everyday and in all conditions. Spend time finding the right car, there are loads to choose from out there and prices are becoming realistsic.

Dont forget, pay for a good inspection, even the youngest 3.2`s on offer will be 15 years old now. And remember it was the eighties when most of these cars were new, a time when Porsches were not bought by enthusiasts! Many were used and abused, so be careful and critical with that service history.

Good luck in your search!

Oops! Sorry, I just realised that you have allready made your choice...Therefore, I wish you all the best in 3.2 ownership, they really are great cars!

Thanks for the encouragement.

I had been looking for a while; and i think i have a decent one, had all the inspections and good reports. Last owner has been very meticulous. I'll let you know via the forum how i get on.

Well I upgraded the 915 boxes in a couple of my cars to Short Shift - dead easy job and made them a lot better as it reduces the throw significantly. It was a popular mod back then (the late '80s/early '90s) and I don't know anyone who had a bad experience, provided they fitted the kit correctly. The factory short shift kit was noticeably better engineered than Stuttgart Connection's version, but then it did cost £200 and come with new gearstick!

The steering wheel is an easy mod - I changed mine for a Momo (still have the wheel and the boss soemwhere)- some slight engineering required to connect up the horn push

try the rennlist for all things porsche.
www.performance2and4.co.uk/guide32_n.htm
www.911uk.com/buyers-guide.asp
these other two sites provide a good 911 3.2 buying guide.

G50 is a must. would definately get it inspected too.
