My mum has a goldfish, had it for 6 months. It seems like it's about to die - not moving much, and its body is bent. I told her to put it out of it's misery - but she thinks it may be ok, I don't.

Is there anything you can do to help it at this stage, or is it a lost cause?

Cheers!

Slowly dose vodka into the tank.......... I have been told that will put it to sleep fairly effectively and painlessly (hopefully someone will be along to confirm that).

Please do not flush it down the toilet alive, nor place it in the freezer alive.

You could try giving it a salt bath - it is a method often used to revive Koi...

You need rock salt added to water - try googling salt baths for Koi to get an idea of how strong a mixture to use...

Are the scales sticking out from it's body, if they are it could be dropsy, which IIRC in untreatable.

And sorry to sound so heartless but, the most efficient and effective way to despatch a fish of goldfish size it to remove its head in one clean cut with a sharp knife.

Callous Barstewards

I have several goldfish. Change about 30% of the water in the tank, run the tap for at least a minute before you put the water in the tank, ideally let it stand at room tempreture if possible.

It sounds like its swim bladder is infected, any fish shop can sell you medicine that will fix him right up again - I recommend Kings stuff always works for mine when the have a touch of white flake.

Does the tank have a filter, if so change it when you change the water. if the fish is sat on the bottom, it doesn't have long to live, maybe 12 hours ?

Good Luck

If you do need to put it down, then clove oil is an anaesthetic which just knocks it out and it never wakes up!
