Hi There,

I have an Elise S1. The previous owner has fitted a 52mm alloy throttle body, and a K&N 57i induction kit. I have read that the K&N kits are not that good (too much hot air!).

Does anyone have any suggestions on choice of induction kits? (will the hurricane kit be any better?)

If the guy hasnt done anything to the ECU, will the throttle body & induction changes have a detramental effect, or will the ECU deal with the changes?

many thanks

There is not a lot that can be done to an S1 ECU so I wouldn't worry about that.

I'll give a thumbs up to the hurricane. I'm pleased with mine although they're quite costly for what you actually get. I'd imagine there are other good alternatives.

sounds good guys, but the question still stands, will either the ITG or hurricane offer me £170 (or more) worth of improvement over the existing K&N 57i thats fitted ?

I don't think the K&N is really doing anything for you at all. From what I'm aware (I admit I may be wrong) the K&N sits open in the engine bay which is not a good thing and to me suggests that it will reduce the efficiency of a standard intake as it will be taking in warm air. You will however gain an induction 'snort' due to the fact that the air filter is not sitting in a silenced airbox. The next step up is to combine the two, i.e. you get the noise of a cone filter but with an integrated cold air feed that goes to the side intake (i.e. the Hurrucane or ITG and I think one of Pipercross's offerings).

I wouldn't expect any discernible power increase from any of them so if you're buying it for noise all I can say is that the Hurricane sounds very good. Whether you justify the expense is very much a personal thing I'm afraid.

I doubt you'll notice a difference.

Do you have the standared airbox? If you can refit that and don't notice a performance increase then the K&N is not doing any noticeable harm.

If you do decide to change it....I may be interested in buying it.

I fitted a Hurricane kit to my S1.

I very much doubt it improves performance in any discernable way, but it does make a lovely noise without making your ears bleed!

The 52mm throttle body certainly improved performance though.

Hi,

I had a K&N (with homemade 4" bendy pipe from the side vent, and heat reflextive material around the bottom of the filter) in my S1 but have changed to a Hurricane, Hurricane sounds better, not so raw and you can feel the air being sucked into the side vent as it fits directly over the side vent and therfore is sucking in cooler air. I also changed my old Janspeed sports exhaust to a 5" Eliseparts, the K&N was just too noisy.

Can really tell if it's made any difference to the performance, only replaced about 3 months ago, may make a difference during the warmer months.

Hope this helps.

Happy to sell the K&N, filter is in good condition, needs reoiling.

Cheers guys.

The car has the 52mm throttle body. The K&N does just sit in the engine bay and suck hot air in. unfortunately I dont have the standard air box though, so cant try the two back to back.
the car also has a larini back box fitted too.

Sounds like it might be worth going for the Hurricane, then at least I know I wont be any worse off than the standard air box (there is a chance this is the case with the K&N). Plus I'm a sucker for nice sound, so thats enough reason for me.
If thats the case, then the K&N will be for sale!

Still, the hurricane will have to go some to sound nicer than my 916 with Termi's on!

No inline 4 with a noisy zorst will sound like a Ducati v-twin on Termis mate cloud9

If only there was a charismatic engine that'd fit in the Lotus engine shoebox and deliver decent power... we had this discussion before on another thread, I suggested a 3-pot like the famous Daihatsu Charade GTti motor (sounds somewhat like half a 911 flat-six) but it hasn't got the legs... frown

Just noticed you're in the North East. You're welcome to come and have a ride out in my car and see what you think. Larini, decat and hurricane.

Had a K&N fitted to my S2 and as other the comments the K&N filter just could'nt cope with the small Lotus engine bay and the heat that built up from it,I actually found the power decreased because of it.I ended up fitting the ITG Maxogen induction kit and although it was a bit costly, the results were fantastic,I would recommend one to anybody who want's to get the best out of their K series engined Lotus.

Cheers for the offer of a drive. How far away from Guisborough are you?

THink I am gonna order a Hurricane induction kit. Will the standard S1 Hurricane kit on Elise parts fit on the 52mm throttle body?
cheers

Could someone please tell me if the ITG Maxogon is worth the extra in price when compared to a Hurricane system in power performance ? Or is there any power gains from these system ?. I should also add that I am not looking for a increase of sound .
