50mph National Speed Limit Possible

New Labour plans would see lower limit and more cameras

News that Labour plans to reduce the national speed limit to 50mph has drawn an angry response from the Association of British Drivers, who today condemned a ‘speed bully policy signalling the end of driving excellence in Britain’.

The government scheme to enforce a 50mph limit with widespread use of average speed cameras was revealed at the weekend.

‘"This is nothing to do with road safety,’ says the ABDs Nigel Humphries. ‘Anyone can see that hazards vary along rural roads, and so speeds must vary with them. A blanket 50 mph speed limit does not recognise that roads vary enormously in character and that a limit as low as 50 is totally unnecessary on many rural roads’.

Numbers of road deaths have failed to improve for the last 15 years, while the only road safety policies promoted by the government have been those which make life more difficult and unpleasant for drivers, the organisation claims. In contrast, investment in driving skills, or improvements to dangerous roads have been played down.

The ABD lambasts the over-emphasis on speed as the sole determinant of road safety statistics, which it claims was always misleading. It says anti-car policies are being rolled out by stealth, one scheme at a time.

‘This is another step in the implementation of a surveillance society where your every move is monitored and no individual discretion allowed. Instead of encouraging intelligent and responsible driving, based on the road conditions and the vehicle being used, we have this dictatorial regime that attempts to monitor and control our minute to minute driving standards.’

With public consultation planned for the proposed reduction to the national speed limit, the ABD is calling for a vigorous response from motorists on whether they think it is a ‘wise and proportional response to the problem of traffic accidents’.

Labour plans to reduce the national speed limit to 50mph - Plans? I thought this was definitely going to happen.

Personally, i fail to see the point in this, other than to catch more people speeding.

Just because people in London can't get above 45 mph, they get all pissy and ban it for everyone.

Typical.

I'd like to see the facts behind their reasoning behind the move - I'm sure they have fabricated them somewhere... they usually do

Don't the government just stir up these contentious headlines to deflect attention away from the real issues of the moment eg their inept dealing of the economy etc etc.
While we are all off debating this idiotic scheme, they will be quietly changing laws & policy on subjects that slip below the radar due to their distraction tactics.
"Good day to release bad news" anybody.........

Or am I just too suspicious?

The end is nigh. They said they're putting up loads of average speed cameras, that to me simply PROVES they're after all our money which they will then use to prop up some banker's pension fund (I did actually mean to say banker, you probably read it as wker).
It solves nothing, just makes us all late for work. If I end up with average speed cameras around where I live, then I will burn them...
The guy in the article is right, it's NOTHING to do with safety, if they wanted to do something about safety they'd make the driving test much, much harder. How hard can it be if I can pass with relative ease?

And part of the problem is in the towns, where the limit is 30. If they knocked it down to 25 there I would still not be too happy about it, but rather that than knocking it down to 50 everywhere else.

I can’t see this happening, how many car/lorry/coach drivers are there in the UK? They are all voters. It would almost guarantee Labour losing the next election.

I hear what you're saying but who knows until you've tried em?

Labour relies on our apathy like this to just sit back, moan in private, and allow them to implement a succession of hairbrain schemes which do little more than make all our lives just a little more difficult.

"Numbers of road deaths have failed to improve for the last 15 years"

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure I am) but surely in relation to the increasing number of cars, buses etc on the road, pedestrians on the street and so forth, if the numbers of deaths are not rising drastically (if in fact at all) over the years there must be a relative improvement in road safety per capita?

I'd rather change the current and try something new than sit back and see my country go down the toilet!!

Am I right in thinking this will exclude motorways and will affect A roads currently with a 60mph limit?
