Last Sunday I travelled from Grimsby to Nottingham on the A46, I noticed the NSL sign on part of the Lincoln bypass was painted grey and the last sign I had passed was a 50mph just after this roundabout there is a down hill section of dual carriageway so I stayed at a steady 50 mph A local police car came passed at around 70 and a few couple of cars came passed at 55ish.

I sent Lincs Police this E-mail

Can you tell me the correct speed limit on the A46 Lincoln by
pass as you drive from Grimsby you come to a roundabout with a 50 limit as you exit the roundabout the NSL limit sigh has been painted grey but there are no 50mph repeater signs and speed tax cameras on the down hill dual
carriageway section to the next roundabout One of you Police cars on Sunday afternoon assumed the limit to be 70mph but a few people stayed a 50 mph
as the last sign but no repeaters so please tell what is the correct limit
for the road in question

Paul

I received this

The speed limit for the Lincoln bypass whilst driving a car is 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph for the dual carriageways. That is unless
the roadsigns dictate otherwise. As I sit here I can't think of any repeater signs, as mentioned by you, anywhere on the bypass that indicate speed limits other than the ones I have quoted.

Yours sincerely

So sent this back.

Dick Holmes

But the NSL sign was painted out in grey paint so the last sign I passed
was a 50 mph I believe there then should be repeater signs to make it
enforceable 50 limit as lots of councils and camera partnerships and the
police [not always by choice] are going around lowering the speed limits and
putting in cameras to enforce the new limit, I was looking for a,
confirmation of the correct limit. b, If there was a reason for the painted
out NSL sign [ I think its the A46/A15 roundabout has yellow tarmac] and has
the cameras been reset to 50 mph

Yes dual carriageway NSL is 70mph and single 60 mph and in lots of cases
there are repeater signs.

Paul.

I then received this

Dear Paul,

I have forwarded your message to the Road Safety Partnership, they are
experts in such matters.

Yours sincerely,

Then today I received this………

Dear Mr Jones

Thank-you for pointing out the glaring error on the part of the staff who
carried out the re-surfacing work on the A46 Lincoln by-pass.

As you are no doubt aware, whilst work was in progress on the by-pass there
was a speed restriction of 30mph on some stretches and 50 on others.
In this case the national speed limit sign had to be painted out to prevent
confusion to motorists.

Once the work had been completed this sign should have been cleaned to
revert the road to the national speed limit.

The error has been pointed out to our collegues in the Lincolnshire County
Council and should soon be recified.

Once again thank-you for pointing out this. I would also like to add, that
it is nice to think that at least some of the British motoring public
understand the system of signing roads and compliment you on your
observational skill.

Geoff Thompson
Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.

Almost human response and no speed kills should I ask for a get out of jail card just in case I get zapped my the Lincs scameras.

Paul.

Remarkable ! From what I've seen lately, whilst undertaking daring excursions into the dark lands 'oop north,' Lincs and Derbys seem to be spending their 'Safety Partnership' cash on actual road safety improvements (high vis. signs, sorting out junctions, reasonable speed camera placements (cue 'There's no such thing as a reasonable scamera'... ) etc.) rather than randomly hiding unmarked camera vans behind road signs as they do down here :shoot;
